The first thing to know is that I'm pretty sure this show was not meant to be taken seriously in any way whatsoever.
The Young Ones followed the adventures of four students attending the fictional Scumbag College: Vyvyan Basterd, the aggressive punk medical student; Rick, the anarchist sociology student; Neil Wheedon Watkins Pye, the paranoid hippie peace studies student; and Mike, the assumed the leader of the group who was apparently blackmailing his tutor and the Dean of the school into giving him grants and good grades.
This show involved a lot of violent slapstick comedy, and also featured surreal elements and the breaking of the fourth wall. There would also be cutaways that had no relation to the actual plot of the episode.
But despite the insanity, The Young Ones became incredibly popular with young people when it first aired, and helped pave the way for alternative comedy on British television.
