While the town and characters of the show are not real, the Women's Institute certainly was, and still exists as a charity organization today. Home Fires focuses on the lives of the women who are members of the Great Paxford branch of the WI. Though everyone goes through their own troubles due to the war, the WI always manages to bring everyone together for some cause or other.
Unfortunately, as good as it was, Home Fires was cancelled after just two series. I just got through watching it, and I will warn you, it ends on a cliffhanger. However, Simon Block, the creator and main writer for the show, has begun continuing the story through a book series called Keep the Home Fires Burning, which I definitely plan on reading.
