David Burke as Dr. John Watson (for The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes

Edward Hardwicke as Dr. John Watson (for the rest of the series, including all five full-length specials)

There are a lot of people who love this show and believe that Jeremy Brett's portrayal of Sherlock Holmes was the best there's been on screen, and I am definitely one of those people. His Holmes was perfectly on point, David Burke and Edward Hardwicke were both great as Dr. Watson (though I personally like Hardwicke a little more since he was in more episodes and had a little more of an impact on me), and I would say that Colin Jeavons is definitely the best Lestrade I've seen on screen.

Nearly all episodes of the show stuck closely to the story they were based on. The show was split up into four different groups: The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, The Return of Sherlock Holmes, The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes and The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes. The five full-length specials were The Sign of Four (based on the novella of the same name), The Hound of the Baskervilles (based of the novella of the same name), The Master Blackmailer (based on the short story "The Adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton"), The Last Vampyre (based on the short story "The Adventure of the Sussex Vampire") and The Eligible Bachelor (based on the short story "The Adventure of the Noble Bachelor").

Due to the death of Jeremy Brett in 1995, the novellas A Study in Scarlet and The Valley of Fear, as well as seventeen short stories, were never adapted for the series.
