Theo ignored the calls from Liam the rest of the weekend. He couldn't bare to talk to him, he knew come Monday he wouldn't have a choice. He would have to come up with a good reason for dodging Liam all weekend. He'd just have to play up the sick card and hope Liam didn't notice he was lying. If he was being honest he was sick, sick of seeing Hayden all over Liam, sick of pretending he wasn't head over heels for his best friend, sick of feeling so jealous.
Theo walked into the front door of the school only to be yanked off to the side.
"Liam, what are you doing?" Theo frowned once he realized who had grabbed him.
"I'm not letting you avoid me anymore, talk to me," Liam demanded.
"About what?" Theo tried to play it off.
"Don't play dumb," Liam crossed his arms.
"I'm not," Theo huffed.
"You've been ignoring my calls all weekend," Liam growled.
"I've been sick, really sick," Theo sighed. Liam narrowed his eyes and Theo couldn't tell if he believed him or not.
"Theo just be honest with me," Liam sighed in defeat, "Do you have feelings for Hayden?"
Theo let out a snorted laugh, "You're kidding right?"
"It's okay if you are, I'll try not to rub it in your face, just be honest with me," Liam looked sympathetically at Theo.
Theo was about to respond when the he realized this may be the out he needed. It would keep Liam from being all over Hayden around him.
"Would you hate me if I said yes?" Theo asked carefully listening to Liam's heartbeat.
"No, of course not, but I wish you would have told me before her and I..." Liam trailed off.
"I didn't know until after," Theo shrugged. That was technically true, he hadn't realized his feelings for Liam until shortly after Liam and Hayden had started dating.
"I'm sorry," Liam looked guilty.
"Don't be, I'm the one that's sorry," Theo felt bad lying to Liam, but he couldn't risk him finding out.
At that moment the first bell rang, "I have to get to class, but I'll see you after?" Liam asked hopefully.
Theo nodded and watched as Liam disappeared.
-
"Theo," Hayden's voice spoke up from behind the werewolf.
Theo turned to see the last person he wanted to see.
"Hey, Hayden," Theo gave her a fake smile.
"Why did you lie?" She asked curiously.
"What are you talking about?" Theo frowned.
"You told Liam you had feelings for me, but you don't," Hayden explained, "You have them for him, don't you?"
Theo tensed. He glanced past Hayden to make sure Liam wasn't around.
"Why did you tell him you had feelings for me? Why weren't you just honest with him?" Hayden asked again.
"I don't want ruin our friendship. He said he'd understand if I had feelings for you so I let him believe I did. I figured that way he wouldn't be so... lovey dovey with in front of me," Theo sighed.
"He loves you, you know," Hayden dropped her eyes.
"What?" Theo frowned.
"I always knew he did, even before we got together, he used to talk about you like you were made of gold," Hayden said sadly. "When he asked me out, I questioned him about it. He said you two were just friends but I'm not stupid. He still talks about you like you're the greatest thing ever. I was jealous at first, but I told myself he was with me not you. But after you left the part Friday...he might as well have not been there. He was so concerned about you. Stiles wouldn't let him go after you, but all he did was worry about you. I like to pretend that he loves me, but I know he doesn't. Not as much as he loves you."
"Why are you telling me this?" Theo frowned.
"He thinks you have feelings for me. That upset him. I can tell. And not because it's me, but because it's not him you have feelings for. I don't want to be jealous of you anymore, so I'm breaking up with him." Hayden explained gently.
"No, you can't do that, he'll be devastated," Theo took a step towards Hayden.
"He is devastated. He thinks the guy he's in love with is crushing on his girlfriend," Hayden pointed out.
"You're wrong. He cares about you," Liam would hate him if Hayden broke up with him because of Theo.
"I'm sure he does. But he loves you," With that Hayden walked off.
Theo's stomach twisted. This was bad, this was really bad.
-
"You are unbelievable," Liam's voice snapped as he shoved Theo against the brick wall of the school.
"Whoa, what are you talking about?" Theo could smell the anger and betrayal on Liam.
"You told Hayden you had feelings for me so she would break up with me. You really plan to just swoop in and take her from me? How could you do that? What were you going to do, fake ask me out knowing I'd say no? Then what go running to her?" Liam snapped.
"Liam, I tried to tell her not to break up with you," Theo shook his head.
"Why would you tell her you have feelings for me?" Liam demanded.
"I didn't. She assumed." Theo explained.
"Why would she assume that?" Liam wasn't buying it.
"I don't know how she knew. She was convinced you loved me and she didn't want to be jealous of me anymore, I swear I didn't want this to happen," Theo looked apologetic.
"Jealous of you?" Liam frowned letting go of Theo's shoulders where he had him pinned to the wall.
"She thinks you're in love with me," Theo said.
"Why?" Liam asked his tone less hostile.
"Something about always being more concerned for me than her, I don't know." Theo knew this would happen.
"This isn't some ploy for you two to get together?" Liam asked with an unsure frown.
"I swear it's not." Theo shook his head.
"Do you really have feelings for her?" Liam demanded his tone harsh again.
Theo dropped his eyes to the floor, "No, I don't."
"You lied to me," Liam's tone was suddenly hurt.
"I couldn't tell you the truth, you were happy with her," Theo gestured down the sidewalk as if Hayden was standing at the end of it.
"What truth?"
"You're the one I have feelings for, I don't know how Hayden knew, but I swear I didn't tell her. I didn't want you to know the truth, I just didn't want to have to see you with her. You said you wouldn't rub it in my face if I had feelings for her, so I let you believe I did," Theo avoided Liam's eyes.
"You're serious," Liam said, listening carefully for any hint that Theo was lying.
"Yeah, unfortunately," Theo nodded.
"Why didn't you ever tell me?"
"I didn't realize it until you were already with her, and I didn't want to ruin our friendship," Theo sighed.
"You wouldn't have ruined our friendship, because I have feelings for you too. Problem is I noticed them before Hayden. She was supposed to help me get over you. I liked her, and she liked me back, I thought for sure I'd be over you in no time. I was wrong. I just learned to ignore it," Liam shrugged.
"You have feelings for me too?" Relief washed over Theo, "Why didn't you ever tell me?"
"I didn't want to ruin our friendship," Liam smirked.
Theo surged forward then, crashing his lips on Liam's.
Liam liked him back. Hayden and Liam weren't together anymore, this day couldn't get any better.
