I woke up with a start.
What woke me up? Lights flashed through the windows lighting the room for a few seconds. Then came the deafening sound of thunder making me wince.
There. That's what woke me up. It is so dark. What time is it?
A glance at the bedside clock confirmed it is almost .......Noon. What? It looked like it was getting darker, like right after sunset.
I got up and looked out through the window. The sky is so dark, and I can see more dark clouds looming in the horizon. The rain is yet to come. The winds have picked up. Probably that's the reason for it.
I decided to go down and grab some food. I am about to call Mom when I remembered she left yesterday for a catering event to a nearby island.
I went into the kitchen and looked around finding my muesli box and milk. I don't have the strength to make something for breakfast. This should do. Oh I need a big bowl to eat it too.
Ever since Rina left I have been catching up on my sleep and lazing around in the house and on the beach. I feel so very relaxed. There were a few times my Mom dragged me off the bed to help her with some work. I was yet to fulfill her wish. You know, about helping her out in her events. Oh well I still have time for it.
While scooping up the last spoon of milk I looked at the phone for any notifications.
Oh it's Rina.
Rina: Hey bitch! We are about to leave from here. See you in a few hours. You better be there when I arrive. Miss you.
Yeyyyyy! Rina is coming home today. Wait. It's like a storm is about to hit here. Shit! I quickly typed up a message.
Me: Hey bitch. Don't you dare get on that ferry if the weather is bad. It's looking like night time here. Seriously Riri.
Rina: What are you going on about. It is so bloody sunny and hot here. I need an airconditioned room right now.
Me: Oh thank God. Hopefully this storm will passover by the time you reach here. Be safe you idiot.
Rina: Alright am getting on board now. See ya. Mmwah!
Oh thank God.
I went out looking through the window again. Shit! That doesn't look like its going to passover. There are just too many dark clouds filling up the whole sky. Something trickled down the side of my face. I slapped my palm on it thinking it's a mosquito.
It's sweat. I am sweating. The weather is making me feel suffocated. There is just too much moisture and humidity in the air. The winds have died down for the moment. Maybe now the rain would come and the thunderstorm would end.
I ran outside into the road to find that it is empty. No one is walking or even riding a bike. I went walking to the closest bend where the café is located.
Closed.
Ok. What the hell is going on. It's getting even darker. I tried calling my Dad, but there seem to be no signal. Damn. I felt the slightest bit of panic lurking around in my subconscious mind. But I pushed it even further and went towards my neighbour's house. Maybe they can explain to me what is going on in this island.
I marched towards the house which is just a few minutes away from the café'. I knocked on the door and Ayesha's Mom opened the door. Her eyes widened when she found me on the doorstep.
"Mia! What are you doing outside? Get back inside your house and close all doors and windows" she ranted on in a panicked voice.
"What is going on? There is no one on the roads and the café is even closed!" I shot back, needing answers and not instructions.
"Girl. There is a huge storm coming. Didn't you check the news? The Island Council have been warning everyone, going from door to door" She looked at my clueless face and explained.
"You need to stay indoors till the storm passes over. Do you have food in your house atleast until tomorrow?"
My eyes widened at the mention of tomorrow.
"Tomorrow? What do you mean tomorrow?".
"Yes the storm could last up to twenty four hours. But it could finish earlier than that too. But just to be on the safe side you need to mak...." Seeing my panic she explained in a calmer voice.
I cut her off.
"Rina is just getting on the ferry to come here, but she said weather is very nice over there" I looked at her desperately.
"They can't get on the ferry! Its just too risky. I will try calling the Island Council" She sounded alarmed.
"You cant! All the lines are dead" I almost screamed over the sudden gust of wind that had started up rattling the windows of Ayesha's home.
"Ok Mia. Why don't you come inside until I can get hold of someone? You can stay with Ayesha for the night. I don't think you should be all alone. I know your Mom is away for an event"
I reluctantly nodded and rushed inside taking one final look outside. It was darker than before, almost night. Lights were needed inside. When the door is closed I thought back whether I had opened any doors or windows in the house. I don't think so. Sigh.
Might as well go find Ayesha. I should try calling Rina once again. I took my phone out and saw that there was a signal and about to call when I received another message.
From my Mom. Probably telling me to be safe.
Boy am I wrong.
Mom: Honey, I am leaving with Rina and the group on the ferry. So see you in a few hours. Love you!
No no no no no no no NO!!! Mom can't be on that ferry! Rina can't be on that ferry!
