"We did it!" I screamed.
"Ok gather everyone. Let's give up a cheer for Islanders Catering"
Once everyone place their hands together we went on "Go Go Go Islanders!"
Our team comprising of ten staff cheered and jumped up and down in celebration. We have completed our or rather my first catering job and it went awesome!
I couldn't help the huge smile that has been plastered on my face. It felt foreign. I haven't smiled like this in so long. I looked to my right. But there is no Rina beside me. But that is okay. She is still giving me support even though she is not beside me all the time and screaming through my ears.
Let me tell you this. It is not easy at all! I don't know how Mom did this. It was a struggle for me but the staff helped me through all the hurdles and whenever I got stuck and didn't know how to move forward.
One thing I found out about myself is that, I can lead. I saw doubt in many of my staff eyes but once I give the go on things it gets done just the way it should. Bickering happened but then I overlook it and see the bigger picture.
"Hey Mia" I heard someone say from behind me. I turned back still holding a smile on my face.
There is a woman in her fifties, maybe, smiling brightly at me.
"Yes? Can I help you Miss?" I asked tentatively.
"I just wanted to say we all enjoyed your catering. Just like your Mom you have done a wonderful job. She will be so proud of you right now" The woman teared up abit.
I thought I would find myself sad, but those words made my smile grow more and I found myself hugging this random woman.
"Thank you! I really needed to hear that to complete our celebration".
I pulled back and stepped back. "This is my first job without her".
"I know" the lady said "Oh I am so sorry, my name is Maria. I always request your Mom's catering for functions. I just loved how she did her job".
That name sounded familiar. I have heard my Mom saying her name a lot of times. So, this is the lady.
"Also" Maria continued "I would like to book an event with you three days from now"
I started to protest but she continued "I know it's very short notice but I have been looking for the perfect caterers since your Mom is no longer here and then I heard you are starting up the company once again. So I had to attend this event just to see how it is" She beamed at me.
"You did wonderful and so I would very much like you to take on the catering of my Sisters fortieth birthday celebrations"
I wasn't quite used to all these showering of compliments. I felt awkward and didn't know how to respond.
"Here is my card. Once you free up do give me a call. Tomorrow morning should be fine. We need to start on those menus soon." She thrust a card into my hands and said a cheery bye and left.
I was left standing there looking at her retreating figure until I felt a hand on my shoulder.
"Boss, looks like we have another event coming up"
I was startled at the new name directed at me. I looked with widening eyes at my staff.
They all looked up to me as if waiting for me to say something or confirm.
I found myself slowly smiling.
"I hope you all are ready for another event"
No sooner had I said it they all cheered.
"And one more thing" they all looked at me "please call me Mia and not boss".
"Okay Boss" They all shouted. I had to roll my eyes at that, but I was grinning.
"Give us a ring for the prep once everything is confirmed" That guy said. He seemed to be the leader for the rest of the employees.
"Will do Mika" I nodded. I managed to know all the employees names while we were working on this event.
Once everyone left and our equipment are packed and stored at my place, I am on my way to the beach with some left over food when I hear the phone ringing.
Who will ring the house number?
Everyone knows my mobile number.
I turned to pick the phone when it went silent.
I sighed. Well...
I turned and walked out the door.
Before I reached the beach I got a text. Pulling the mobile out of my shorts that I changed into, sat down on the beach.
I put the food on my lap and opened the container with one hand while my other hand unlocked my phone screen.
What I saw made me do a double take that nearly toppled my food container into the sand.
Zach
Zach: Mia, I tried calling you but you wouldn't pick up. I tried home phone as well. Are you mad at me?
What? He never called me. I quickly checked my calls.
Shit shit shit I have like five missed calls since last night!
I guess I forgot to check my calls. Plus my phone was on silent mode.
Me: No. I am just finding out about the missed calls. What do you want Zach?
This is the first time he has made contact with me after Mom died.
Well, that is not hundred percent true.
Sigh.
I avoided his calls. He called me a thousand times.
I talked once and he said he is stuck in his job and they wouldn't allow him to take any leave. I just cut his phone call while he was talking and never talked to him after except for a handful of texts here and there.
Talking to him was making me too emotional at the time. I just couldn't do it. I think I wanted him here with me then, but he wouldn't come.
Dad tried to reason with me but I wouldn't listen to him either. Boy was I a spoilt little brat.
Zach: I wanted to hear your voice and see how you are doing.
I was hesitant to keep replying to his messages. But why not? I am not angry at him and I am not with Adam either.
Sigh
I want him here!
Finally my life is somewhat back to normal and Zach wants to start talking now.
OMG! Zach is making an appearance once again in MIa's life. What would happen now?
