Chapter 35

My parents never even found out about the creepy man encounter that occurred last week. Braden and I figured that the man simply wanted any money that I had and my phone. After all, he was homeless.

My family is still grieving my Grandma, not nearly as much, but the atmosphere is still a bit... different. I finally don't fell like her death is my fault. If anything, I gave us a chance to say last goodbyes.

Once again, I am heading to a basketball game. Our record is 20-5. We are about to close out the season. This game is against the Eagles. They are the best (other than us) in our league. We lost to them once, and beat them twice. Both wins had Alex in the starting 5, though. Trey, Alex, and I arrive in Trey's dad's huge SUV. We all jump out. Trey and Kelsey help Meghan out of the car, as I unfold her wheelchair. Meghan is wearing a sweatshirt two sizes to big. It reads, "East Corner Riptide Basketball." And on the back, "Zytillio #31." Kelsey wears a matching T-shirt.

By halftime, the game is tied. Coach is all fired up in the locker room, inventing about a million plays, and bouncing around. It really is quite funny. The tall, skinny, bald ref enters the room and tells us that we have no more time. We didn't even get to do our cheer. We start with the ball. Trey inbounds to Max. He dribbles up and pulls up to shoot a three. He's been over seventy-five percent from the baseline threes today. He has 18 points, 4 rebounds, 11 steals, and 1 turnover. A pretty good game if you ask me. His defender jumps to block him. Max releases. As he lands, he lands on his defender's ankle. He rolls it, and I hear a loud crack from where I am.

Max's body hits the floor. He rolls onto his back. Tears fill up his pain-filled eyes. Immediately, Alex, Coach, and I run over to him. The tall, skinny, bald, ref runs out with a stretcher. They strap Max on and the medical team goes to call 911.

"Hey Paul George." I say. "That was a nasty fall."

"Join the team of awesome injured people." Alex gestures to the three of us.

"This sucks." Max manages a weak smile. They take him away.
