"Oh, Andy, you made it." This was another voice. A voice I knew all too well. Suddenly, she was in front of me, her long reddish brown hair framing her face and her light blue eyes blinking at me innocently. Scout.
"What the hell are you doing?" I asked, angrily.
Scout frowned, "You don't want to be here, Andy? Honestly, my feelings are a little hurt. I went to all this trouble to get you and your girlfriend down here, and you don't even appreciate it."
"Why would I appreciate you kidnapping my girlfriend and using her as fucking bait to trap me in this warehouse?"
Hailey's soft sobs continued to echo in the warehouse and knowing my girl was scared and in danger, not only upset me, but made me really pissed at Scout.
Scout ran her fingers across my face and I tried my best to pull back from her touch. "I love you, Andy," she whispered. "I've always loved you."
"Well, the feeling isn't mutual. Just let us go!"
"No, see, when you broke up with me a year ago, I was hurt. Yes, we'd grown apart, but we still loved each other. We were meant for each other, but I let you go. You wanna know why I let you go?"
"No," I said.
Scout continued, "Because when you love someone, you have to set them free, and then they'll come back to you. But you didn't come back to me." Her face changed from the sweetness she'd been faking to an angry frown. "I had to learn from Twitter that you had found someone else. Do you know how that made me feel? We loved each other, Andy. We were supposed to always be together. But I find out you met some whore and you're with her. You're bringing her on tour with you and getting tattoos for her." Scout rolled her eyes and scoffed, "Hailey."
"I don't know what you want me to say, Scout."
Scout let out a frustrated scream, pacing back and forth in front of me. "I want you to say you love me back. I want you to realize that we belong together and you don't love Hailey."
"I'm not going to realize that Scout. I don't love you anymore. I love Hailey more than I ever loved you."
"Don't say that!" Scout screamed. "Look at how much you've hurt me. Look at how much I want you." Scout slowly rolled up her sleeves, revealing dozens of deep cuts on each arm.
"I didn't ask you to do that, and you know I wouldn't want you to."
"But I did, and I'll keep doing it until you love me back. I can't live without you, Andy. I just can't." Scout grabbed a knife that was laying on the floor nearby. She held it firmly in her right hand, then leaned over her left wrist, pressing the blade to her pale skin.
"Stop it, Scout." I commanded. She ignored me and carved an A into her flesh. Despite my protests, she continued, finally writing out ANDY on her wrist. Blood flowed down her arm and she smiled down at it.
"Do you see how much I love you, Andy?"
"No, but I see how insane you are."
"I'm not insane!" Scout screamed. "I'm not."
"So, was dating Jake just a way to get to me?"
Scout rolled her eyes, "Of course, I would never be interested in Jake. When I found out about you and Hailey, I knew I had to find a way to get back into your life. Jake was just too easy, or maybe I'm just too good of an actress. Then, he cheated on me and it made my plan even simpler. You all felt such sympathy towards me, even your girlfriend was there making me 'feel better.' You all trusted me. So naive."
Scout walked over to Hailey, the bloody knife still in her grip. "Well, you've gotten awfully quiet, Hailey." Scout laughed, running the blade of the knife across Hailey's cheek, leaving a small bloody gash. "Cat got your tongue?"
"Get away from her," I said.
Scout groaned. "Why do you care about her so much? She's nothing special."
"To me, she is. Hailey means more to me than anyone in this world. I love her more than I love myself. I would do anything to protect her. So, please, Scout, you can do whatever you want with me, but please just leave her alone."
Hailey stared at me, tears in her eyes. "I love you," she mouthed.
"I love you too," I mouthed back.
Scout turned her attention back to me. "Say you want to be with me."
"I want to be with you, Scout," I mumbled.
"Oh, I want to be with you too, Andy," Scout grinned. She leaned down and placing her lips against mine. She thrust her tongue against my closed lips, parting them with her force. Her tongue thrashed around my still mouth. The sensation disgusted me and I was relieved when she finally pulled away, frowning.
"You know, Andy, you don't seem like you really want to be with me."
"That's because I don't," I said in an obvious tone. "You're forcing me to do this."
"Now, now, I'm not forcing you to do anything. You're choosing to do this."
"What choice do I have?" I questioned, exasperated.
"Well, you can love me or I can torture your girlfriend. Either way, I'm perfectly happy."
I frowned, squirming against the tight hold of the duct tape.
Suddenly, the doors of the warehouse burst open.
Scout gasped, "What the hell?"
A group of policemen entered the warehouse, guns held readily at their side.
Scout screamed in Hailey's direction. "You called them, didn't you? Fucking bitch."
"Drop your weapon," they commanded. Reluctantly, Scout dropped the knife, letting it clatter against the cement floor. Two of the officers handcuffed Scout and her accomplice, the large guy who had strapped me to the chair, and began walking them outside to the police car, while the other two officers worked on releasing Hailey and I.
"I love you, Andy!" Scout cried, as they dragged her away. "This isn't over."
The duct tape was quickly cut off of me and I ran to Hailey, who had also been released and was just sitting in the chair, crying.
"I'm so sorry this happened, baby," I said, lifting her out of the chair and pressing her against my chest.
"It's not your fault," Hailey sniffled. "I'm just glad we're both okay."
"Did you call them?"
"Yeah," she admmited. "Scout was too stupid to think of taking my phone. While she was talking to you, I dialed 911. I couldn't really say anything, but I guess they could hear what was going on and tracked the address."
Just as I was about to respond, one of the police officers walked up to us, stating, "I know this has already been a very stressful day for you two. However, I'm going to have to ask you to come down to the station and answer some questions, just so we can get an idea of what happened here."
Hailey and I complied, spending the remainder of our afternoon in the LAPD office, answering questions and filling out paperwork. After what felt like forever, we were finally able to leave and return home.
This whole thing with Scout had been insane and terrifying, but it all seemed irrelevant now that I knew Hailey and I were okay. The experience made me realize the intense love I felt for this girl. I never wanted to let her out of my sight. I wanted to hold her close to me and keep her safe. Sometimes the most horrible events make you realize just how much you need a person, and I needed Hailey. I needed her with me for the rest of my life.
