3 YEARS AGOIt was a regular chilly Saturday night in December in the artistic, cultured, and musical city of Memphis. Jael made the decision to go back home for the Christmas holiday break rather than staying alone in her university campus apartment. Kostas' family traveled to Greece spend the holidays with his grandparents and other relatives from his father's side, and he opted not to go along with them that year, so he stayed with Jael and her family instead.
The two of them had been at their other best friends Lucia and Byron's house and ironically were watching How the Grinch Stole Christmas and eating pizza. All the while enjoying each other's company and laughing and joking about which character looked like which friend.
Jael and Kostas were having so much fun that they didn't notice that there were five missed calls on each of their phones and frantic text messages from the Carters.
About two hours before the hour struck 12 and marked the day as Christmas, Kostas decided to check his phone to see if his sister Gabby had text him when he noticed all the missed calls and messages."Jael! Jael! Have you looked at your phone?" He comes into the living room anxiously yelling over the noise of the tv and the laughter of his friends.
A glare appears over her face with a hint of annoyance.
"No, of course I haven't, we were watching the movie so I haven't checked it in a while. Why? What's up? Gabby text you?"
A frown and a looks of defeat plays over Kostas' handsome features as his broad shoulders hunch forward in an unattractive way.
"Check your phone," he quietly says above a whisper.
She looks at him with an expressionless face. Why couldn't he just tell her whatever it was that concerned him?
"Why? What's going on?"
"Just check your damn phone!"
Ugh, rude! Jael huffs but grabs her phone from the abyss in the couch between the cushions where it had fallen in hours ago.
"What's going on Jael?" Lucia asks quietly, giving her friend her full attention.
"Yeah what's going on? Everything cool?" Byron asks, equally concerned.
She sits there quietly not saying anything, but the hand covering her mouth gave enough indication that something was amiss.
"Ezra and Genesis were in a car accident. A diesel swerved to avoid black ice on the interstate and hit them. Whoever was driving the car didn't have enough time to react and they hit the divider wall. They're in critical condition at Baptist Hospital," Kostas told them with a heavy heart when Jael couldn't speak for herself.
Rising to her suddenly heavy feet and still not speaking, Jael leaves the couch with her phone in hand to call her parents and check in on her siblings.
"Lucia go start the car," Byron tells his sister.
