THE BEGINNING OF MAY

"Girl I can't believe it's May already! Feels like it was just the last chapter that we were in February," Lucia says to Jael one day after her classes and she was at Jael's house.

"Huh? Last chapter? What the heck are you talking about bitch?"

"What? I didn't say anything like that."

"Whatever."

"So, do you have any plans??"

"Plans? Plans for what?"

"Bruh, don't act like we don't all know this month is your birthday."

"My birthday isn't huge. The last time I tried to do something for it, it didn't go as planned. I tried inviting all these friends out to dinner and basically none of them showed except you guys and a few others. I'm done with trying to do big things for my birthday for a while."

"Look, I remember and I am well aware that was complete shit. Just goes to show who your real friends are, but you should consider doing at least something small."

"Like what? No way am I going partying. I don't wanna go partying for a very long time."

"Understandable. We can do things you like! We can go out of town. We'll just wait for the rest of us to be done with school in a few days and we can all take off of work and go out of town! Even if it is just for the weekend."

Jael contemplated what her friend was saying. She secretly did want to do something for her twenty-fourth birthday, but nothing too extravagant. Going out of town sounded like a good idea though.

She did want to get away from all the madness that was her life. Get away from the extraneous training she had been doing with Davin, which is going very well, and get away from Damien for a while.

Ever since she had that talk with Damien back at the office, he's been a little cold towards her. Ironically though, he's also been a bit more respectful. She really hoped that he wasn't on to her, but she kind of doubted it. Nowadays, she goes into the office and does her job and goes on reaping missions and reports back to him. All the while, biding her time of when she can finally get rid of him. She was waiting for the "you're ready" from Davin. Until then she had to keep training and suck in her pride.

"I think going out of town sounds like a good idea. I've been wanting to visit Seattle, but that may be a little too far at such short notice. Maybe Nashville? I still have never been there and it's not too far from here."

"Nashville? Nashville is trash."

"Lu, I'm not about to go to New York or Miami or L.A. Those places are all too far for a weekend trip. I am well aware that Nashville is trash. All Memphians know that place doesn't deserve the hype it's given, but keep in mind that all of us have to be able to take off of work for the same days."

"Ugh, fine. Twenty-five, we're going somewhere cool."

The girls both laugh and agree.

"ROADTRIP, ROADTRIP, ROADTRIP!!" Lucia and her brother both chanted from the front seats in Byron's jeep.

The four best friends were making their way from Memphis to Nashville for Jael's birthday getaway. They were able to all take off work for a weekend road trip two weeks after Jael's actual birthday to go celebrate the one person who needed the most celebrating out of the four of them.

"I appreciate you guys coming with me to do this," Jael says from the back seat next to Kostas.

"Are you kidding? Of course, we're coming along! No way we weren't going out of town and relaxing for the weekend with our main chick," Lucia says appreciatively.
