"Well don't you look tired." my mother says as I walk into the house, Brayden on my hip.
I nod. "I'm exhausted. Brayden's protesting." I tell her, laughing humorlessly.
"What do you mean?" she asks, chuckling and taking him from me before sitting on the couch.
I sit on the other one, sighing heavily. "Justin and I haven't talked in two weeks. We got in a huge argument and since then the only thing we talk about is work. And that's not even talking, it's just typing back and forth on our work computers. I think Brayden misses him and the kids. He won't sleep."
My mother sighs, nodding sympathetically. "What was the argument? It must've been pretty big for you guys not to talk to each other for so long."
"I called him out on his shit." I shrug.
"Language, Elianna."
I sigh. "Sorry. I called him on the fact that he's been working constantly and ignoring the kids and I. The night before the argument he was working so intently that Mama Lee had a family emergency and had to take time out to bring the kids to me so that Justin could keep working and she could attend to her family. It shouldn't be like that! It was almost their bedtime anyway. He couldn't gone back to the office when they were asleep! On top of that, Aileen and I were woken up at five in the morning by his crazy ex girlfriend banging on the door and screaming at me to give her the children."
My mother's eyes widen in surprise, she didn't know Isabelle was that insane.
"I had to call the police and then call and wake Justin to get him to tell the police that I had permission to have the kids since he's the one with custody." I tell her, shaking my head. "Later, he showed up, thanked me and then was about to leave without another word. I tried to tell him that he can't just ignore the fact that Isabelle is either watching Brayden and I or found a way to find where we lived and showed up. It's dangerous for Brayden and I'm not okay with it. He played it off like he couldn't do anything about it." I scoff.
My mother sighs. "Well, I agree with you. I think he should be a little more thoughtful. They are his kids."
"That's not my point mom. I love those kids like they're my own. I don't mind taking care of them but it's not okay that Kameron asks where his dad is all the time and why he's always gone." I say, the exhaustion causing my filter to disappear. "He needs to step forward and be the parent he once was."
"I understand, honey. But you can't change anyone. You've got to remember that. He'll either come around or you need to make a decision."
"I can't just leave those kids, ma. They deserve someone who's gonna love them and take care of them."
"What about Mama Lee? She's been doing it since before you were there." she says.
I sigh, shaking my head. "Sure, there's mama lee but that's different. They know that's not their mother."
"They know you aren't either." my mother interrupts.
I sigh, shaking my head. "You don't get it. I'm going to take a nap so you can spend some time with him and I can get some sleep."
She nods. "Alright. I'll take care of him for a few hours. You just sleep."
I nod, standing and rolling my eyes once my back is to her. I then climb the stairs and enter the guest bedroom, laying on the bed and almost immediately falling asleep.
*** Meanwhile ***
As Justin walks into his parents home, the kids run in immediately, hugging their grandparents before going over to their toys.
"Hey honey." Pattie says, hugging her son. "How is everything?"
Justin sighs, rubbing his face. "Not great. Mama Lee still isn't back. She left last week to be with her family through this. So, I've had to take care of the both of them by myself."
"What about Elianna? Can't you ask her to help?" Jeremy asks, confused.
"Elianna and I aren't talking right now." Justin strains, his face scrunching up.
"What? Why?" Pattie asks, confused.
"We got into a huge argument about the kids and Isabelle. The night mama lee found out her goddaughter I was working, as always so she took them to Elianna. The next day, Isabelle showed up at her door at five in the morning banging on the door and demanding the kids. She had to call the police to have her taken away from her apartment. So when I went to pick up the kids, we got into a huge argument because I hadn't been there to take care of the kids recently and she thinks Isabelle knowing where she lives is dangerous for her and Brayden." he explains, shaking his head at the end.
"Well, I have to agree with her on this one, Justin." Pattie says after a moment.
Justin looks at her, eyes brought together in disbelief. "What?"
"Justin, it is not her responsibility to have to deal with Isabelle randomly showing up at her house because she wants her children that she doesn't have the right to." Pattie explains. "And yes, I understand there's nothing you can do about it because you cannot control Isabelle but showing more care would probably help. It's not fair that you've been throwing yourself into your work and she and mama lee are left taking care of the kids by themselves."
"I'm just trying to get shit done and prepare for this custody case, mom! I don't know what everyone expects from me."
"We expect you to still be a parent." Jeremy cuts in firmly. "Just because you're going through a custody battle on top of work does not mean you abandon your children."
"Abandon them?!" Justin exclaims.
"Yes." Jeremy replies, nodding. "If you are not there and you are not taking care of them, it's a form of abandonment."
"Honey, you have a good lawyer and a great backup. You have been taking care of these kids while she ran off and didn't show up to your custody hearing. Instead of stressing over what might happen, spend time with the reasons you're working so hard." Pattie interrupts. "That's what's important and if I'm not mistaking that's the entire reason Elianna moved out for the time being. So you could focus on the kids. How do you think she must feel knowing that you're not doing that? It's gotta sting."
Justin takes in a deep breath, gulping it down and licking his lips.
"Son, we know you're not intentionally doing all of this. But you need to be more aware of your actions. It's not just about you and the kids anymore. There's a girl and her child involved too." Jeremy tells him. "And you can be upset with us, but we're just trying to be honest with you."
Justin shakes his head. "No, I'm not upset with you. I just um, I gotta go."
"Honey-" Pattie starts.
Justin hurriedly gets up, grabbing the kids and telling them to say bye. They listen calling out a 'bye' as Justin rushes them outside and into the car. He turns it on once buckling them in, speeding down the road and towards their own home.
