Chapter 2

I wake up, with the sun piercing though the shattered window. I get out of bed, and put on my hat. I sit on the ground, worried if AJ and I will be kicked out of the group. I don't know how long AJ can last out there. He's a kid after all. I don't know how long I can protect him for. There's only so much I can do for him. One thing is for sure. I will protect him at all costs. Just like Lee protected me.
I see AJ start to rustle in the bed. I see him start to open his eyes, and look over at me. I say "AJ, come sit next to me. We need to talk." AJ moves the covers off him, and hops out of bed. He plumets right next to me, prepared for a lecture. "Today's going to be an awkward day. You need to be on your best behaviour. You also need to apologize to Louis," I state. "Why Louis?" AJ asks. "Louis was best friends with Marlon. You'll need to earn his trust again." AJ takes a long pause. "When will I get my gun back?" AJ questions. "Not for a long time. We'll talk about that later." I get up from where I was sitting, and walk over to my backpack. I put it over my shoulders, and look over at AJ. "Let's go downstairs. Maybe we can talk to some people." AJ follows my lead, as we walk out of our room. I close the door behind me, and look around. I notice Tenn colouring on the ground. "Hi Tenn. how's it been?" "Good I guess. It's been weird without Marlon around." I nod my head. "Yeah, it certainly has. Where's everyone else?" I ask. "They're usually still sleeping. They don't usually get up for another hour." "I guess we're used to getting up early", I say to myself. I look at his drawing. It's him and his sisters holding hands. Poor kid. "That's a cool drawing you've got there." I say. AJ looks at his drawing, but stands silent. "Thanks." He looks at me, then continues to colour his drawing. "Anyway, I'll let you keep drawing," I say. "See you around, Clem," Tenn replies. "If we're allowed to stay," I mutter under my breath.
I decide to go outside with AJ. It looks pretty early in the morning. Everyone's probably sleeping the night off. I sit on a picnic table, where Louis and I were sitting last night. I really hope he feels better. I think of what Violet said to me last night. Does Louis really have feelings for me? Louis is funny, nice, and positive. I'm sort of surprised he's never had a girlfriend. AJ quickly grabs my attention, when he says "Clem. The dogs running right at us". I look over in AJ's direction, to see Rosie running right at us. Rosie stops dead in her tracks, and looks at us. I stick my hand out, and hope to God she doesn't bite me. She licks my hand, as I realize this dog isn't as petrifying as I thought she is. "Should I pet the dog, Clem? I don't want him to hurt me." I let out a little chuckle. "Her names Rosie. Stick your hand out, and let her sniff you." AJ sticks his hand out, and Rosie sniffs it. Soon enough, Rosie is licking AJ's face. They soon enough run off into the distance, as I'm left lost in my thoughts. As I get more and more lost in my mind, I realize, I might have feelings for Louis. I wish Lee was still around, so he could give me relationship advice. He probably wouldn't of been the most supportive, but he would've been helpful. I wish Lee wasn't bitten. It always feels like it was my fault, that he's gone. I miss Kenny as well. That guy would do anything, to keep AJ and I safe. Out of all the ways he could've died, he died in a car accident. Once again, because it was my fault. The fact Marlon was shot in the head by AJ, also makes me feel guilty. Marlon pushed all the wrong buttons with AJ anyhow. He made some unspeakable decisions.
In the end, we're all kids. We all make terrible mistakes. Just like Violet said. Speaking of Violet, she pops out the school door, and walks towards me. "We're deciding who's going to be the leader. You might want to come, and see if you can stay and stuff." I look at AJ, and signal him to come with us. Rosie follows along. AJ and Rosie rush into the school ahead of us, and decides to play fetch with a branch.
Violet and I step into the school, where the group is in one big circle. "I guess I was lost in my mind for an hour," I say in my head. Violet and I get close enough to the circle, to be contributed into the conversation. "As a group, we need to decide who is mature enough to be the leader of this group. It takes a lot of responsibilities, and is not an easy job," Willy says. Aasim states "I think I'd be the perfect leader. We need to think of our future. Have a plan for what happens next." I see Louis roll his dark brown eyes, while standing alone. "Not everything is about longterm, you know," Louis says. "We need to think for the group, Louis. We need to make sure we survive," replies Aasim. "You do you, I guess," supposes Louis. "We do need someone to think for the group. I think Aasim can handle responsibilities quite well," states Mitch. "I think Clem would be a good leader. She can kick ass, and is smart as hell", says Louis. I let out a toothy grin, with my cheeks turning pink. "Just make sure that little kid doesn't screw up ever again, and it's a possibility," alleges Omar. No one else wants to be a leader, which means Aasim and I are battling for the spot. "I would say Clementine's a good leader, but we hardly know her, y'all. She could backstab us, for all we know," Ruby says in a worrying voice. Louis replies to her with "Get to know her then! It's not like she bites. She's cool in my books." I see Louis look at me, with a smile. I feel my heart melt. I notice everyone is staring at Louis and I. I'm pretty sure everyone knows, we've got a thing for each other. Willy breaks the silence with "We have two candidates. Clementine, and Aasim. We need everyone to vote for their choice." Aasim looks over at me, with a competitive look on his face. "I vote for Clem," says Violet. She adds on with "She's responsible enough to handle sticky situations, which is what we need. My final vote is Clementine." I look at Violet, as an attempt to say "thank you." "Aasim is someone we know. He thinks for the future, which is what we need. My vote is Aasim," Mitch says. I see Mitch and Aasim high five, as I roll my eyes. "My vote is definitely Clem. She's cut- I mean smart, and can handle business. Like Vi said, she can handle sticky situations. My vote is definitely Clem," Louis says with a grin right across his face. Omar questions "Did you almost call her cute?" I see Louis' face go completely red, as he dodges the question with "T-that's not the point. She's a good leader. Let's just move on." I smile at him, as Ruby says, "I have to say Aasim on this one. We know he's a good hunter, and we all know he cares about our future. Sorry Clementine, but my vote is Aasim." I shrug my shoulders when Omar says "I like the vibe Clementine gives. I think she's a good leader. My votes Clementine." Willy is the last one to vote. "I say Clementine. We just met her, but let's give her a chance. She knows what she's doing." I completely blank out, in surprise of what just happened. "So um. I'm the leader now?" I question. "You are now!" Louis says in a cheerful voice. Everyone who voted for me, smiles, and takes off to do their own thing. I walk over to Aasim to say "You were close. I thought you were going to win. If you want, you can be the co-leader?" Aasim responds with "Sure. That sounds good. That way we can help each other out." He thanks me, and takes off with the rest of the group. Violet is sitting on the steps, just looking at the broken windows, for some odd reason. I hear Louis playing the piano in a different room. Maybe talking with Violet would be a good opportunity to hangout with her. Or I could talk to Louis, and get to know him better.
I take off in the direction I hear the music. I check my shoulders, and see Violet a little upset. I shrug it off, and feel my stomach turn as I get ready to flirt with Louis.

(Ahh I can't wait to write Chapter 3! It's where all the juicy stuff comes! Stay tuned! :)
