Chapter 16: I'm being chased and I'm running out of bullets
Sebastian's voice echoed across the room as smoke erupted everywhere and I covered my mouth to not inhale it.
It was a smoke grenade.
Relief flooded my body at the thought of it not being something worse. Smoke grenades just made people unconscious. A thought entered my mind and my body fell into action.
Derek was no longer near me and I ran across the marble floor in search of one person. Everything was chaos. People were screaming and coughing, and slowly they began to collapse. They weren't harming anyone.
Because this was a kidnapping.
I could barely see anything and I realised this was too much smoke from just one grenade; another one must've gone off. I was in the place I had last saw Aiden and I whirled around in search of him. A slouched figure near the staircase caught my eyes and I ran over to the body.
Aiden.
"Aiden, don't breath this in," I slapped his cheeks a few time to shake him awake. He mumbled in response.
Coughs erupted from my throat and I grabbed the satin material of my dress and ripped it. Placing the piece of cloth over my nose and mouth, I did the same to Aiden. These cloth masks wouldn't hold for much longer. I could feel my mind becoming disoriented.
I grabbed Aiden's arms and hauled him up. My teleporting watch would have been really useful right now. I began walking with Aiden's weight falling on me and searched for the closest exit. The back door which led to the garden. I slowly dragged us both towards the door and pushed it open.
Aiden and I fell to the ground and I took of the cloth and sucked in a deep breath of fresh air. This would help dissipate the smoke from inside. Coughing from beside me made me look towards Aiden who finally began to awake. He wasn't as rendered unconscious as everyone else because I had gotten him out just in time.
The entire area was quiet now which meant everyone in there was unconscious. My brain sought of what to do. The team was still upstairs. I pressed my earpiece.
"Guys? Devin?"
Nothing.
Worry filled my body and I ran a hand through my hair. They must've smoked the entire place up. I didn't know where Sebastian or Jessica were and I hoped they had gotten out safely with Aaron and Veronica. They had their own security team but when I had filled them in before, it was agreed upon that they'd leave with HAC agents instead.
Footsteps approaching snapped my mind back into focus. I grabbed Aiden. "We need to leave. Come on."
Aiden didn't say anything and let me pull us both away from the house. We needed a car. There must have been so many parked out front and I tugged Aiden to make our way around the house.
"Where are we going?" He asked, his voice a raspy from the smoke.
"Away," I stated.
"What about my parents?"
I bit the inside of my cheek. "I don't know, Aiden. I'm sure they're fine. They're meant to be with Sebastian."
There was always an exit strategy. The team knew if something happened like this, I would take Aiden to a safe house that only I knew about and later come in contact with them.
A row of cars came to my line of sight and I hurried towards one. I didn't know what was going on inside the house; Derek and his team must be looking for Aiden or Aaron and Veronica. Luckily Crystal was already safe and away with an agent.
