Chapter 32: I'm going to kill you
My scream sliced through the air and Derek's grip on my hand faltered.
My heart felt as though it was breaking through my ribcage at the fast fall, and my stomach dropped.
We hit the water.
For seconds, my body lay immobile inside the ocean, almost as if recovering from the great jump. And then my survival instincts kicked in and I was splashing my legs and arms. My body broke through the surface of the water and I gasped, sucking in a lungful of air.
"DEREK!" I called out into the vast sea.
My hair sprayed against my face as I kept myself afloat. My eyes searched frantically.
His dark mop of hair appeared from the water and relief flooded my veins
"You're getting old, old man!"
Derek pushed his hair away from his eyes and shot me a glare.
"Come on. Swim."
I followed beside him, pushing my arms through the currents and waves. I couldn't see anything from here, just the ocean. It's like we had been swallowed by water.
"How do you know where we are going?"
Derek peered over at me. "I just know."
I rolled my eyes at his vague reply.
I don't know how long we swam for, but it was long enough for my arms to grow tired and my legs to pause before every kick. My right leg was weighing me down due to the still healing shot wound. Just as I was about to ask him how much further, I saw trees.
A patch of land which seemed to lead to the woods sat a quarter of a mile away. I pushed my body to keep moving past the heavy waves. By the time we had reached it, my body fell against the leafy and muddy ground in a heap.
"We need to keep moving. Come on."
I grunted at Derek's words and struggled to get up. I blew out a breath and trudged down a muddy path beside him.
My clothes clung to my body and I gathered my hair to squeeze the water out. I hated the uncomfortable and sticky feeling of my body right now. A breeze blew past and I shivered. It was nightfall by now and the moon hung over us, guiding our path.
"Where are we going?" I asked.
I glanced over at Derek as he answered. "Another safe house. We'll steal a few cars and get there. My people are waiting there already and I need to come in contact with them."
I nodded and stifled a yawn. My limbs were aching from all the swimming and I just wanted to curl into a ball and fall asleep.
"What then?" I found myself asking.
Derek flickered his steely gaze to me. "We need to find their main base. Once that goes down, the news will spread and the organisation will be destroyed."
I threaded my fingers through my wet hair as I pondered on Derek's words.
"Wouldn't their main base be in Russia?" I questioned.
Derek shook his head and stepped over a fallen tree trunk. "No, that's too obvious. My team thinks it may actually be around New York."
I raised my brows in surprise. "New York? How on earth would this group be doing all these things and still be under the radar in N.Y.?"
"Well clearly they have their own tech team keeping everything a secret. We just need to break through their security walls."
I pursed my lips. "You know, HAC could help us with this. Devin and Jake are the best techs there. The leaders could help."
