Kyle opened his left eye slightly. He suddenly closed it again. To much light. Kyle groaned and rolled over. Why was his bed sand- wait. Kyle looked at what he thought was the sheets under him. Sand. He looked up and was blinded again. Sun. He looked left. Sea. He looked right. Forest. He sat up and looked in front of him. Kat. Wait, what?! Kat?!
Kyle pushed himself up. He staggered over to where Kat lie on the ground. Her hair was matted with sea water. She was covered in sand from head to toe. And she was breathing. Kyle sighed, relieved. He looked around for Noah or Al. He saw Noah half on land, half in the water. Noah's finger twitched. He moaned. Then, he apparently decided to pass out again.
Kyle felt a hand grab his ankle. He jumped, but it was Kat. She had apparently dragged herself over to Kyle.
"Ky-le." She moaned and spat sand out of her mouth.
Kyle held out his hands to Kat. She grabbed them and hauled herself up. She spit more sand. Kyle noticed that she wasn't putting any weight on her right leg.
"Are you..." his voice trailed off when he saw blood dripping out of a gash in her leg. She half moaned.
"Oh- oh. My-" Kat stumbled. She bit her lip, clearly trying not to scream. Kyle guided her over to a nearby tree and helped her sit down.
"Th-thanks. " Kat leaned back against the trunk and closed her eyes. "Ow. Ow. Ow." She reached out and grabbed Kyle's hand, pulling him down beside her.
"Are you ok, Kat?"
"N-no..." Kat moaned again.
"What happened last night. Or whenever it happened? You know, after I fell."
Kat shook her head. But she answered anyways. "Noah. He went back in for me. He parted that water around my face so I could breathe. Well, all the time he was conscious. By I could barely get here. When I was a few hundred feet away- that's all I remember."
Kyle nodded. He understood. He didn't even remember getting there.
Kat looked over to the sea. Then she squinted. "Is that-"
"Noah? Yeah."
"And you didn't even think to get him?"
"N-no?"
"He could've drowned!"
"No, he couldn't."
Kat shook her head. She used Kyle's shoulder and the tree to get up and limp over to Noah. Kyle followed her.
"Kyle!" Kyle ran to her.
"Yeah?"
She put a hand on Noah's forehead, but jerked her hand back as soon as she did so. "He's freezing! And he's shivering. Kyle!"
"Oh," was all Kyle could say.
"Oh? Oh! Oh?!" Kat slapped Kyle.
"Ow-"
"Now help me get him over there." Kat jerked her thumb towards the tree.
"Ok, ok." Kat grabbed Noah's ankles. Kyle lifted him by his armpits. Together, they got Noah propped up against the tree. Kyle made the air around them warmer so they could dry faster.
"Ok, ok, ok... What do we do?"
"Um... maybe make sure he's breathing?"
"He's alive, Kyle! I mean to wake him up or whatever."
"Uh- slap him?"
Kat slapped Noah. Again. Again. Again. Again. He slightly tilted his head. Kyle held his breath. Then he let it out. Nope. Nothing. Kat sighed. She shook her head. She sat down beside Noah. She laid her head on his shoulder. Kyle sat down beside her.
"It'll be okay..." He took her hand and squeezed it. She just nodded.
"Yeah. Just fine..." Kat laid down and used Noah's lap as a pillow. Kyle laid down too. It was getting dark and he needed to find Al in the morning. He needed his rest.
