Tom's POV
Doug's apartment, 2 days later
"See you later guys, have fun", Doug said as he closed the door behind us.
I decided to take Lia out for dinner tonight. Although she had been a little sick lately, she was doing great and it had almost been a month since she came out of the hospital, so I figured going out wouldn't hurt her. Besides, she was going back to work the day after tomorrow, so she would go out sooner or later and I wouldn't really have a choice but to get along with it. I also wanted to have some time alone with her. I missed it. I honestly missed being just the two of us.
Wanting to be the perfect gentleman, I helped Lia going out of the car as we pulled up to the fancy little restaurant I had chosen. We then walked in, hand in hand.
The place was very romantic : dimly lit, music playing in the background. It was beautiful, but not half as beautiful as the woman standing next to me. Lia looked absolutely stunning. She was wearing an off-shoulder black dress that was falling down a few inches above her knees with scarlet high heel shoes and matching handbag. She had curled her hair for the occasion and put red lipstick which contrasted perfectly with the dark color of her curls. I felt like a slob compared to her with my blue jeans and white shirt on. I couldn't take my eyes off of her, she literally got me under her smell.
(A/N : Here's her outfit)
(A/N : Here's what Tom is wearing 😍. He's so fucking handsome I swear for a moment I forgot what I wanted to write next 😂😂😂)
A few empty plates later
"Have you ever...imagined what it would be like to have a brand new start ? I mean, like having a new job, maybe even moving to another town, I don't know", I curiously asked, my eyes lowered on the small cup of coffee in front of me.
"You think about it again don't you ? Quiting ...", she said, her question sounding more like a statement. I could feel her gaze on me even though I wasn't looking back.
"Well, yes and no. Just...asking", I answered, now fiddling with my spoon to avoid any eye contact. That was a topic I had been willing to talk about with her for quite a long time, only I didn't really know how to go to it. Plus, I sort of feared her reaction. I didn't want to be a cop anymore, and I didn't want Lia to be one either. Knowing she would be back on duty in two days was making me sick. I mean, after what happened to her... What if it happened again ? Maybe she wouldn't be that lucky then, maybe she wouldn't make it alive... I didn't even want to think about it as a possibility. I just wanted to react before it was too late and one of us ended up getting killed.
"Well...", she started thinking, "I don't know. I never really thought about it before, but I love my job, I love being a cop. I don't think I could quit, a part of me would be missing if I did. You know, this job is what helped me out healing my wounds . After my grandmother's death, I had nothing left, I was so broken I just wanted to die to forget all the pain. I felt so... useless. And one day, just like that, the idea of becoming a cop popped into my head out of the blue and I finally became one. This job is all my life Tom, it's all I have."
A little hurt by her answer, I didn't say anything. All her life ? All she had ? I was actually expecting I was all this.
"Tom ?", she called after a few minutes of silence. I didn't answer so she placed her hand on top of mine before asking, "What's wrong baby ?"
"What about me ?", I finally spoke, this time lifting my head up to see her.
"What do you mean what about you ?", she frowned, probably not fully understanding what point I was trying to make.
"You said your job is all your life. You said it's all you have. So what about me ? "
"You ?", she took my hand in hers, squeezing it gently, "You're a thief."
"A thief ?", I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion.
"Yes...", she gave me a playful smile before adding, "Because you stole my heart." Her expression then became more serious, "Do you know why I said this job is all my life ?"
I shook my head no, waiting for her to continue.
"Because it's what brought happiness back into my life, through you. It's what led me to you, and somehow I can't help but be thankful for that."
My insides literally melted at her words and I almost felt guilty for having thought even a second that I maybe wasn't that important for her.
"I love you", I genuinely told her, staring directly into her eyes.
"Me too Tommy"
I smiled lightly before bringing her hand to my lips to kiss her knuckles. I then spoke again, noticing the both of us were done eating
"Shall we go princess ?"
"Yep, but I don't wanna go home just yet. Well home..." she giggled, "I mean Doug's home of course"
"Where do you wanna go then ?"
"I have an idea", she winked at me, a cute little grin on her face.
"Where ?", I raised an eyebrow, curious.
"It's a surprise", she responded in a seductive tone, "Well, if you let me drive your Mustang that is..."
Reaching into my pocket, I threw the keys to her. I couldn't wait to find out what was in that pretty little head of hers.
