FOUR • JAMES AND KASS' PRANK

JAMES POTTER WAS BORED, with Sirius snogging Marlene McKinnon, Remus studying with James' precious Lily flower, and Peter being Peter and tagging along with Remus, there was nothing for the Potter boy to do. To be dramatic, he frankly felt left out, which was an abnormal feeling for him. He sighed, his mind racing with ideas on what he could possibly do to be productive with his time. They had just finished classes, and they had the whole evening to themselves. That's when an idea popped into his head, grinning mischievously, he hopped to his feet and hastily left the common room in search of a particular curly-black haired girl with steely grey eyes.

He didn't have to look very far, as if she weren't around in the common room, library, or anywhere else in the castle, she normally occupied her time outdoors beside the black lake. It was where she often went to think, and yes, James knew that, because she was his best friend. How could he not know it? If he didn't, he'd surely question why he was even her best friend to begin with. Sneaking up behind the girl, he let out a weird noise that was a mixture between a screech and a roar, almost sending Kassandra into a panic induced frenzy which made James laugh the loudest he's laughed since being back at Hogwarts.

"Prongs! How dare you!" Kassandra screeched, playfully rolling her eyes as she shoved him backwards in a teasing sort of manner.

"Sorry, Spots, couldn't resist," James grinned. "Mind if I join you?"

He watched as Kassandra moved over slightly in order to let him sit down, to which he did, but not in the way she was expecting. He fell down sideways, landing on top of her, which was indeed an accident, that caused heat to raise to both of their cheeks as he stammered out an apology and moved off of her.

HEART FLUTTERING, Kassandra reassured James that it was quite all right, before she looked out into the Black Lake, a sort of dazed look on her face. She had come out there to enjoy the evening as classes were over until the next day, and she didn't really feel like associating with very many people. James, however, was an exception. Because even if she originally wanted to be left alone, his company always left her in brighter spirits. He was her best friend, after all.

"To what do I owe the pleasure, Jamie? Shouldn't you be pining after Evans?" She teased, and once again pushed down the irritation at her mention of Lily.

James shrugged, "She's studying with Moony and Wormtail, and Sirius is too busy snogging Marlene McKinnon," he rolled his eyes. "He apparently didn't stay with Kayla for very long."

     "Typical," sighed Kassandra.

Her brother really was the type to snog, shag, or leave them. It was sad, really. She couldn't wait for the day when he would finally pick a girl, and settle down. That would be the day.

"So I figured I would come to see if you were up for a prank," James smirked.

"I'm always up for a good prank, Prongs. You should know this by now."

Because it was true, no matter what mood she was in, she never backed down from a prank. Pranking was in her blood somehow, and she indeed loved the looks she got after every well thought out prank that usually meant having detention with either Professor McGonagall, or Professor Slughorn.

"What'd you have in mind?" Kassandra smirked.

TWO HOURS LATER, their plan was set into motion. It only took two hours because James insisted on fixing his hair to make it look good enough before they established their plan.

Sneaking into the kitchen, by tickling the pair, the two mischievous Gryffindors headed inside. Greeting the many house elves that worked in the kitchen, Kassandra searched for a particular one named Ritzy.

"Hello, Ritzy, I have a peculiar request to ask you," Kassandra said as she bent down to where she was eye level with the House elf, while James stood awkwardly beside of her.

James was in awe of how she spoke to House Elves with the utmost respect.

"Yes, Miss Black, Ritzy would be happy to do so!" Ritzy squeaked.

Whispering into Ritzy's small ear, Kassandra had told her the plan. Handing her a vial with an odd liquid inside of it, Ritzy questioned nothing as she said she would do it.

THAT NIGHT AT DINNER, James Potter sat in between Sirius, and Kassandra, as he smiled dashingly down the Gryffindor table at Lily Evans, who ignored him as per usual. Though, nothing could diminish his confidence, or good mood that he had found himself in. He quite enjoyed Kassandra's company as he's always done, but this time it felt weird pranking with just the two of them, sharing laughs. It was nice.

James sat there, his eyes traveling around the Great Hall as Sirius conversed with them about how they all need to find Moony and Wormtail girlfriends. And that Kassandra was not aloud to find a boyfriend, which amused James despite the odd tingling in his stomach, but it had not amused Kassandra. Not one bit.

The only two not daring to touch their food was Kassandra and James. For everyone was about to have quite a shock as everyone who had taken a bite of something, somehow all turned into ducks. Bursting into giggles, James high-fived Kassandra, but his gaze quickly turned to McGonagall, who he swore had her lips turned up into a smile, before her usual stern expression returned.

He watched as she briskly walked to the Gryffindor table. He locked eyes with Kassandra, both of them knowing what was coming.

"Detention, Mr. Potter, Miss. Black, tomorrow evening five o' clock, my office," Professor McGonagall sat with her stern tone of voice.

"Yes, Professor," spoke James.

"Of course, Minnie!" Exclaimed Kassandra, causing James to mentally facepalm.

Professor McGonagall pursed her lips, before walking away.

"Minnie? Seriously, Kass? You could've gotten in so much more trouble," James scolded.

"And? I didn't though! So bam! In your face, Potter!"

Shrugging, James dropped the subject. He didn't regret a moment of how he spent his time that day, in fact, he thoroughly enjoyed every moment. Detention was definitely worth it, especially as he seen Kassandra's steely grey eyes light up as they put their prank into action. They of course got scolded by their friends as they were left out, and they may have turned into ducks as well. But James did not regret one moment of it.

And if you'd ask Kassandra, neither would she. For the same reasons, but denial clouded both of their judgment, and James was still too infatuated with Lily Evans.
