CHAPTER FOUR; SNAPE'S PLEA

ALONE BY THE BLACK LAKE, Kassandra stared out admiring the beauty. It was after all, a beautiful day. The sun was shining, birds were singing, and the lake shone beautifully as the suns rays hit it in just the right spot. She had finally broken away from the marauders for the moment for some peace and quiet. She loved the boys, really, but she enjoyed her alone time, too. It's relaxing to be by ones self at times, especially with how much homework they were receiving.

Her eyes glanced up quickly, as she heard someone cough to get her attention. She was originally alone outside, no other student in sight. To say she was surprised to see Severus Snape in front of her, didn't exactly do how she felt justice. She didn't have it in her to be rude, even if she quite wanted to be. She was just in a really good mood, and couldn't bring herself to be mean to the extent she normally was.

"Yes, Snape?" Kassandra questioned with a slight sigh. "Alone, are you? Where are your Death Eater buddies?"

Snape stares at her blankly, "Yes, I'm alone. No, this isn't a trick."

"Alright, I'm curious. What do you want? And please, sit down! You're making me nervous."

She watched surprise flicker in his onyx eyes, as he quietly took a seat next to her, too close for her liking, but she didn't want to be rude and move away.

"I wanted to apologize to you. Only to you," Snape said, it was now Kassandra's turn to be surprised. "You struck a cord within me that day when we mocked you the day in Hogsmeade," he drawled. "I do want to be better."

Kassandra stared at him, wide eyed. She couldn't believe he even remembered the day she had said those words to him. Regulus seemed to have forgotten, so how come Snape didn't?

She must've been mad for what she did next, or perhaps she was feeling extremely generous that day due to her good mood, she didn't know. But she looked at him, and smiled.

"All right, Severus," Kassandra said. "I can help you, but only if you really are serious about this."

    "I am," he nodded.

Sighing she smiled once again, "if you make me regret this, I will hex you into oblivion. You just gained a friend, Severus. Use it well."

Snape smiled, which was rarely ever seen, as he said, "you won't regret this, Kassandra. Promise."

Kassandra smiled, "i hope not. Now run along, I'll catch up with you later, I'm trying to wind down with some free time to myself."

    "Understood. See ya later, Kassandra."

HAPPINESS WAS A RARE EMOTION, that Severus Snape hardly ever truly felt. His first memory of true happiness was the day he met Lily Evans. She had been playing with her sister, Petunia, when Petunia had called Lily a freak for being different. Severus walked out of the tree he was in, and made flowers appear in the palm of his hand, as Petunia went off yelling how they both were freaks. An instant friendship was made, until they were sorted into two different houses at Hogwarts. They started to drift apart, he made some Slytherin friends who weren't the best crowd, while blasted James Potter began chasing after Lily. He ruined the friendship further by eventually calling her a mudblood. And then Lily started dating Lucas Meadows.

Now, Severus was happy for a completely different reason. And that reason was Kassandra Black. Sure, she was technically a blood traitor, along with her twin brother, and her boyfriend, and friends. She was friends with Lily Evans, but Severus had a friend. A friend who wasn't involved in the Dark Arts, and it was a bonus that she was strikingly beautiful. Another case of unrequited love, he'd suspect. He couldn't help it, though. She's funny, intelligent, beautiful, and so much more. She deserves better than Potter.

But that's the way of it, for Severus that is. Everyone loves James Potter, but nobody cares for the Slytherin he torments. Nobody ever cared for the Slytherin the Marauders torment. It was only about how lovely the Marauders are, and how evil Slytherins are. But what they don't care to think about, is what makes Slytherins evil in the first place. And why a House determines if your evil or good.

Severus knew of the traitor amongst the Marauders, and he wants to disclose that information to Kassandra, but he can't. He only hopes that he can get close enough to the Dark Lord that perhaps he'd be merciful and spare her life. Yes, that'll be what he has to do to ensure her safety. He'd do anything to save her, but perhaps that won't be enough. He doesn't know.

He could care less about Potter, or Lupin, or Sirius Black. All he cares about is Lily Evans, even after all this time. For always, and Kassandra. Always. It will always be those two that he cherishes above anything and anybody else.
