"Wow, it's so cool."
It was New Year's Eve. The fireworks festival had just begun, and the night skies had already been filled up with all sorts of fireworks. It was also on this day that we celebrate our first anniversary. I hadn't told her yet, but I've got a small gift prepared for her.
"Do you think we'll still be together by next year?"
"Huh? Well, I certainly hope so. I wouldn't miss any day with you if I could. I'm sorry but I can't promise anything, I don't want to give you false hope. We've got this far, so here's to wishful thinking," I said, choosing my words carefully.
"Then, promise me one thing!"
"Okay?"
"Promise me that as long as you still love me, love me like there's no tomorrow. Because if we ever were to break up, I want to know that at least while it happened, it really happened. I just want to know that you truly did love me when it mattered."
"Promise."
"Okay," she said. "I'm just so happy that we made it."
"Hey, I've got a gift for you," I said, digging my pockets for that one gift. "Turn around for me."
"Why?" She said, her eyes full of curioustiy.
"Just trust me," I said, smiling to myself. I had been planning this for months.
"Fine," she said, giving up.
"Close your eyes too."
She didn't answer, but I knew she did what I told her. I pulled out the gift from my pocket, unlocking the small lock on its back. I put my arms over her head, and place the necklace, slowly locking it.
"There," I said. Somehow, my voice was still audible eventhough the fireworks were loud. It was as if time stood still, and all that mattered were me and her.
"Since when?" She asked, her voice cleary showing she was really happy for the gift.
"That's a secret," I said before kissing the back of her head. "Happy first anniversary, Love."
"Gosh, you're so cheesy," she said, but she didn't elaborate any further. "Thank you."
We stayed there for almost the whole night, and I remembered quite clearly as the clock chimed midnight, the warmth of her body as I carried her back to the car. I remembered driving her back home, and carrying her to her bedroom. I remembered saying happy new year to her parents before leaving. Most importantly, I remembered giving her a good night kiss and saw a beautiful smile forming on her sleeping face.
For me, that was more than enough, that was the most beautiful gift I could have ever hoped for getting.
