By the time they walked out of the police department and down the street to Baby, Dean had still not found the ability to speak. Or, for that matter, to put together any line of thought whatsoever.
Dean walked over to the driver's side door, and gets his keys out of his pocket, just standing there. Dean stares off into the distance, not caring the Sun is in his eyes at full heat capacity. Not caring about anything. Standing shocked, still, about what the Sheriff had just told him.
Sam, on the other hand was fidgeting, still not sure as to how to react to the information he was in the process of processing.
"Dude, you going to open the car anytime soon? Or would you rather wait until Christmas comes?"
Dean didn't think about what he was doing, he just opened the door, got in the car, and sat there looking like a stunned mullet.
"You gonna close the door, or--" Sam paused, thinking about what might be best for both of them. "How about I drive today?"
Still in complete silence, Dean got out of the car and walked around to the passenger side. Eventually Dean had shut his door, and then they were off, headed towards an address which the Sheriff had texted them.
Sam turned the radio onto a non-stick (and therefore trash in Dean's humble opinion) channel, to see if he could jolt Dean out of the trance-like state he was in.
Near, far,
Wherever you are,
Now I know that my heart will go onWhen Dean didn't show any sign of his usual disgust, or turn the radio off, Sam pulled their car over and turned off the engine.
"Are we going to talk about this?" Sam said, watching Dean cautiously.
"Talk about what?"
"You, Dean. Ever since you found out that you're a dad, that you have a kid, you, well those are the first three words you have basically spoken."
"That can't be right."
"Yes, it can, Dean. Look, I know this has turned out to be slightly different to our normal case, but there's still a job here and we still need to work it."
"But, Kara--"
"Kara nothing. Her mother's dead, Dean. Cassie is dead. She has no family apart from you. So if she is willing, then we will be taking her back to the bunker with us when this is done."
"Sam, it's not that simple. She must hate me. Hate the thought of me. I never even knew she existed until twenty minutes ago."
"Dean, don't worry. She doesn't hate you. She was probably just shocked. She has been through a lot lately. It's not her fault, but it's not yours either." Sam looked over at Dean, who had turned to face the window. "You want to drive the rest of the way?"
Not even waiting for Dean to answer, Sam hopped out of the car and walked around to the passenger door, opening it and giving Dean the keys. Dean grabbed them happily and got back in the driver's seat.
"Bitch."
"Jerk."
And with that, they were on their way to the address which they had been sent. But not before Dean had changed the music to something a little more appropriate.
Carry on my wayward son,
There'll be peace when you are done,
Lay your weary head to rest,
Don't you cry no more
