The waitress returned to their table with their meals before Sam had a chance to slide the conversation back in the right direction.
Not that Sam didn't want Dean and Kara to get along, but simply because they needed to figure out what happened to both Cassie and Mr Darlinghurst.
"One Greek salad for the gentle giant, one Cherry Pie for the hottie," she said with a wink. "And two double bacon cheeseburgers with fries for my friend here."
"If you guys need anything else throughout your meal, just give me a shout," she worriedly glanced at Dean. "Not a literal shout though."
"Thankyou, and will do," reassured Sam, always the gentleman.
As Sam opened his mouth to try steer the conversation back towards the partly unanswered question, Dean spoke.
"So you like double bacon cheeseburgers."
"So you like pie."
"No," Dean felt deeply offended by Kara's words. "I goddamn love pie. Best goddamn food on the planet. Double bacon cheeseburgers are also really delicious though."
Kara's face turned from sassy to impressed in 0.2 seconds flat. "I have to agree with you on that one."
"I don't mean to interrupt," Sam interrupted. "Kara, you never finished answering my question. Had your mother's eyes ever changed colour prior to the day she died?"
"Changed colour how?" Kara asked, before taking a bite of heaven. She chewed quickly, trying to take her mind off what was going on in her head with food.
She wasn't exactly sure if she should trust Sam and Dean Winchester yet. Although they seemed nice, and Dean seemed to have a great taste in food, it didn't take away the fact that the first time they met, they had lied to her.
"Changed, as in the same way you said they did the day she died. Like, go full black, or flash blue, gold or red."
"No, not that I can recall," Kara quickly took another bite, trying to hide the lie she had just told. From the Winchesters, from herself, from everyone.
Since she was able to see, her mother's eyes had always changed. Not as suddenly as they had in the classroom, but they would change nonetheless. Usually only during times when her and Kara were alone, and there were always changes in how Cassie would behave.
Occasionally, her mother would go through phases where she wouldn't change her eyes for months on end. They would stay their natural brown, and when the light caught them, they were the most beautiful thing Kara hd ever seen. These were the good times. When Cassie seemed to be calmer, more collected, more involved in the community, and nicer overall.
The earliest memory Kara had was a vivid one. Her mother had taken her out shopping - she couldn't have been more than three months at the time, and left her in her pram while she went to try something on in the fitting rooms. All of a sudden, an intense feeling of confusion and power envelopes Kara, and in the mirror at the far end of the hall, Kara's eyes turned gold, and her hand left a trail of the colour when she touched the edge of the pram. The attendant in the corridor looked at the mirror when she heard Kara's laugh of excitement, and screamed.
When Kara and Cassie got home, she told Kara that she needed to hide what she could do from people, or nasty people would come from her. She told Kara one thing everyday until she died: 'Leave the golden girl inside'
So she did."Kara, you realise we can tell when you're lying, right?"
Kara was brought back to reality at the sound of Sam's voice. She couldn't tell him about her mother. Not without endangering herself.
"I'll be right back. Bathroom break."
