I didn't know the first thing about being a dad. Hell, I didn't even consider myself a father, seeing as how I missed out on the birth of my daughter and the first six months of her life. All I did was help make this sweet little angel before me and yet...she didn't even know who I was.
"You want to hold her?" Alex's friend, Blue, asked me. I had been wanting to hold her for awhile, but I didn't want to accidentally drop her or anything. I've never dealt with an infant before and it was still pretty surreal that I was partly the reason of this infant's existence.
"I don't know how to hold a baby." I admitted.
"I didn't either, but it's very easy. Come sit down and I'll show you." I walked over to where she was, sitting down, as she handed me the baby. "Now, you can sit her on your lap and she'll just chill with you for awhile, or you can face her towards you and talk or play with her. She likes when you sing and dance with her, but when she's hungry she gets really cranky."
"How will I know if she's hungry?"
"Trust me...you'll know." Frost chuckled, nodding his head in agreement, as I looked down at this beautiful child. She smiled up at me, making me smile, as I instantly grew comfortable with her in my arms. She was too precious.
"Hi there, sweet Halo." I cooed, gently rubbing my hand down her soft cheek.
"See...you're a natural." Blue said, smiling at me. I know she was just saying that to be nice, but it definitely boosted my confidence like no other. Thirty minutes later, Halo was still in my arms, but she was starting to get a little fussy.
"What happened? What did I do wrong?" I asked, looking over at Blue and Frost. She hopped off of his lap and walked over towards us, gently poking at Halo's cheek, as Halo chased Blue's finger with her mouth.
"She's hungry. Ready to learn how to make a bottle?" She asked, not bothering to wait for an answer. She grabbed Halo from me and handed her to Frost, signaling for me to follow her. We headed into the kitchen and Blue handed me a can, a bottle, and a bottled water. "Okay first things first, you want to add the powder to the bottle. Three scoops is all you need, then you'll add the water until it gets to the six, and then you'll put the top on and shake it up." As she guided me, I did everything she told me to, ignoring the shaky motions of my hands.
"This doesn't seem like alot." I grumbled, shaking the bottle.
"Just wait for it." She handed me a container of banana oatmeal cereal, instructing for me to pour some into the bottle. Halo was now crying loudly, I'm guessing because I was taking a long time to fix her bottle. "Now shake it up and come feed her." We headed back into the living room, where Frost was bouncing her on his lap, while Blue wrapped something around her neck.
"She's all yours, J." Frost said, as Blue placed her in my lap. I placed the bottle into her mouth and she immediately calmed down, getting comfortable in my arms as she silently drunk her bottle. "We'll leave you alone with baby girl for awhile, but call us if you need us." He and Blue left the room, giving each other looks of lust, as they headed to their room. Good God...I hope they aren't too loud.
"Oh, and once you finish feeding her...place her on your shoulder and pat her back until she burps." Blue added, running back into living room. She then ran back out, leaving me sitting there with my eyebrows furrowed. Looking down at Halo, she looked up at me, while still drinking her bottle...making the cutest little noises as if she were drinking too fast and trying to catch her breath. I laughed a little, rubbing my finger down her little finger, feeling a warm feeling in my heart.
"You're so perfect." I whispered, placing a kiss on her forehead. I'm sure I'll never have another chance at being a father, so I was going to enjoy this while I can, in hopes that she won't remember me not being here for the first six months of her life. Once she finished her bottle, I did what Blue told me to do, placing Halo on my shoulder and patting her back. It didn't take her long to burp and soon after...she was fast asleep. Not knowing what to do next, I kicked my shoes off and stretched out on the couch, placing Halo on my chest as I drifted off to sleep.
