I stood up and kept quiet while the other captains came in to congratulate Captain Kuchiki on completing her first month as a captain. It's been a month of threats, blackmail, erasing time stamps, and spreading lies about me being incompetent. When I first arrived, people enjoyed my company, but now the majority of them distance themselves from me because they believed every lie she told. Now, people are telling me how I should be more like my sister and even remind me that I'm the oldest, even though we're both hard workers and I tend to complete paperwork fast.
While she received advice I knew she'd never take, compliments on the work I did, and small gifts, I stared at the ground tuning everyone out. There was no point in me being here, she only kept me here out of spite. I didn't know why though, she got what she wanted. Renji and I were together but there was an obvious tension that everyone could sense. Especially since we had a big argument after he checked my hours and accused me of lying to him. She knew what she was doing and didn't feel an ounce of remorse. Everyone is so quick to say I'm obsessed, but she's the one going out of her way to torment me.
"Do you not hear me calling you?" Captain Kuchiki giggled in a soft tone.
"I tuned out for a second." I answered with no feeling in my voice whatsoever.
"You've been doing that a lot lately."
"Lately, I've been miserable, so it tends to happen."
"If you want, we could talk about it later." She said as if trying to convince everyone she cares because everyone has to know that Rukia will always be there for people even if they treat her like shit.
"Personal issues shouldn't be brought into work. What is it you were asking for earlier?" I shifted the attention back to her.
"They should if it affects your work."
"You're crossing boundaries, captain. If I don't feel like venting to you in front of everyone then it should be respected."
"No need to be rude, I'm only concerned about you." She lied.
"Were you concerned when you decided to ruin my relationship? Or was the concern there when you lied to Renji saying I wasn't working with you even though I was? The only thing you're concerned with is ruining our relationship and tormenting me because you missed your chance with him." The sound of chatter in the room decreased and I could feel everyone's eyes on me, but I didn't care. The worst has already happened and everyone already chose their sides.
"I didn't miss my chance." She corrected me. Everyone stared intently daring themselves to speak but no one said anything. They just watched with a disappointed look that I knew was directed towards me.
"You completely missed it the minute you walked away from him at the academy with a rich guy your sister abandoned you for since she was too high off her rich life and didn't want to help her maybe four-year-old sister until she thought she'd die." Rukia raised her eyebrow and tried to interrupt but I wasn't going to let her. "Let's not forget he only took you in because his dead wife, the sister that didn't think of you, requested it. Now tell me, do you want me to keep going, or do you prefer I leave it alone Captain Kuchiki?" There was a long silence.
"Captain this is a prime example of why I should've been drunk." Rangiku whispered.
"At least Renji isn't here. Things could've been a lot worse." Captain Hitsugaya responded to Rangiku.
"My lieutenant and I will be taking our leave now, please enjoy the party." Captain Hirako said before leaving the gathering and I followed.
