I walked over to the Brookes replaying what Mom told me over and over again. I jogged up the front walk way and rang the doorbell. No one answered at first. Who can blame them though? It's pretty early. I stared at the door waiting for someone to answer. Finally someone did. It was Ryan. He had a white tee on with black adidas shorts. "Yes?" he asks.
"I came to say goodbye to everyone," I answer.
"You're leaving today!" he exclaims. He steps aside and I come in.
"Yeah," I confirm. "Is everyone up?"
"Yeah, but Parker's in the shower. I'll tell him now." Ryan starts to walk up the stairs, but turns around. "There's coffee in the kitchen if you want any." I nod my head and wander into the kitchen. There was Mr. Brookes sitting at the island reading the newspaper and Mrs. Brookes was pouring coffee.
"Can I have some?" I asked. She turned around and smiled.
"Of course you can," she cheers.
"Thank you," I shake out.
"So are you excited?" She asks handing me a mug full of coffee. I drained half the cup in one gulp.
"Yeah," I say, "how did you know I was leaving?"
"Parker has been rambling about you leaving for the past week," Mr. Brookes says. He sets down his paper and stands up. He walks over to Mrs. Brookes and plants a kiss on the corner of her mouth. They make love look so easy. "I'll see you for dinner." Then he walks out of the kitchen. I heard his car start and drive down the driveway.
"Mrs. Brookes can I tell you something?" I ask sitting down in the seat next to where Mr. Brookes was just sitting.
"Of course you can," she says sitting down next to me.
"I like your son," I add, "a lot. And I'm going to tell him today. I just don't know how."
"Oh Jenny you didn't have to tell me that." She laughs, but shortly stops after she started.
"Jenny didn't have to tell you what?" I hear from behind. I spin around in the barstool and see Parker standing there with grey sweatpants, no shirt, and slightly wet looking hair. I get up and walk over to him.
"I came to say goodbye," I say trying to change the subject.
"I know," is all he says. I step forward and wrap my arms around him. I feel his arms wrap around my waist and he pulls me to him. Don't cry, don't cry, don't cry. But what I told myself did no good. I felt the tears spill out of my eyes. I look up and see that his eyes are full of water.
"Don't cry," I say.
"That's not fair," he whispers. "You're crying too."
"Well it's okay for me to cry since I lo-" I stopped myself. A confused look quickly spread across his face. I turned away towards Mrs. Brookes. I give her a hug.
"Have fun, but not too much fun. And don't get pregnant," she hits my stomach.
"I have no intentions to Mrs. Brookes, but thank you," I whisper. She nods her head, then walks out of the kitchen.
"I'll leave you kids to it," she says over her shoulder. Leave us. Leave us to what?
