CADE
I hated lying to Penny but, I had to. I wasn't ready to tell her anything until I knew more than I do now. Throughout the entire vacation, we all were having a great time and Charlie was the happiest you could imagine any kid would be being at Disney World.
Reality quickly sank in after we returned to our house and the next day we took Charlie to school before both Penny and I went off to our jobs.
I had gotten a text from Sterling telling me to meet him during noon. It was a good time for me because that's when my lunch break was and I could have some of my employees cover for me if I would run late.
The morning seemed to have gone by quickly as my lunch break caught up to me. When I pulled up in front of the big mansion that I hadn't been to in years, I noticed right away that so far, on the outside, things looked to still be the same.
I got out of my truck and slowly began walking up the long driveway towards the front door. Then I knocked and within just a few seconds, it was opened and there stood a man who looked to be in his late forties, with dark slicked back hair, a couple of thousand dollar suit, cigar in one hand and brown eyes scowling at me.
"Who the hell are you?" He asks.
"I'm here to see Sterling." I tell him.
"Name?" He asks.
"Cade." I reply and before I could say my last name.
"Really? Cade as in the man who killed Sterling's dad?"
"Just tell him I'm here." I glare at him.
"Pff." He rolls his eyes and opens up the door more so that I could walk inside and shuts the door behind me. "Wait right here." He says as he begins walking down the hallway in front of us to get Sterling, I'm assuming.
"I wait for a couple of minutes before he finally comes walking back out and has me follow him down the hallway until we get six doors down where he opens the door, has me go in and shuts it behind him.
I see Sterling sitting in behind his desk.
"Ah. You made it." He says.
"Yeah." I reply not too thrilled.
"Please, have a seat." He gestures with his hand pointing to one of the chairs in front of his desk.
I think about it for a moment until I decide to sit down.
"So, what is it you want?" I ask him getting right down to business."
"That's something I've always like about you Cade, you were always good at getting to the point." He chuckles.
"Come on man." I tell him.
"Alright." He says while taking one final drag from his cigarette before putting it out in the ashtray. "I'm having a casino built not too far from here for a client of mine. In fact, he's an old client of yours, Mr. Radcliffe, ring a bell?" He asks.
"I told you, I'm not part of that life anymore." I remind him.
"And I told you that there's only one way out of this lifestyle, not to mention you owe me for what you did to my father not that long ago." He smirks.
"Your father deserved it." I tell him.
I can see just how much that affected him by the way he clenched his jaw.
"You've got some nerve talking to me like that." He tries to threaten me.
"Really? I have some nerve? Don't you think it's also very brave of you to come find me and ask me to build something that I'm sure is illegal, for you?!" I tell him with a raised eyebrow.
"Tell me, does Penny know the truth about your business?"
"What do you mean?" I ask with clenched fists.
"I mean, does she know how bad your business is and how much money you're REALLY bringing in? I mean, how does it feel to know that your wife is the one truly holding you both together?" He smirks.
"I don't know how you got your information but..."
"Oh come on. We both know I'm right." He says.
"Shut the fuck up!" I snap at him.
"Hey, I'm just stating the facts, not to mention also offering you a job where you can be making a lot of money. Enough to support your family.
"I'm not going to do it." I tell him.
"Let me ask you something, did you really think that the world would believe your whole 'good citizen' bit? The world knows you are and trust me, nobody really wants to do business with you. In fact, if it wasn't for your wife, the jobs you have now for your business wouldn't even exist." He begins to laugh.
Wait a minute, did she know about this? Did people really not want to hire me because of my background? Did she really not believe in me enough to where I could get my own jobs?
"Wow." I say under my breath.
"So, do we have a deal?" He grins.
I know I shouldn't do this but we do need the money, not to mention that this will only be temporary. And if she can go on not telling me that I'm not really getting the jobs myself, then I can do this without her finding out and this way also, I can get rid of Sterling after this for good.
"Yes, we have a deal." I agree while shaking his hand.
Next chapter will be posted soon! :)
