CHAPTER 9: Make The Calls

PENNY

While putting Charlie to bed, I gave him a kiss and as I was getting up, ready to turn out the light before leaving when he stops me. 

"Mom?" I hear him. 

"Yes?" I reply. 

"Are you and dad going to stay together still?" He asks concerned. 

"What do you mean?" I asked as my heart broke a little. 

"Are you and dad going to get a divorce?" 

"No. Why would you think that?" 

"Because the way you guys were fighting earlier." He says. 

"I'm so sorry sweetie that you heard that but I promise that we aren't going to get a divorce. It was just a fight but don't worry, we'll work things out." I assure him. 

"Okay." He nods. 

"Goodnight sweetie, I love you." I tell him. 

"I love you too." He says as he gets more underneath his covers and I slowly close his door. 

When I make my way downstairs, I see both Jeff and Silvia sitting on the couch and she's cleaning up his knuckles that look busted up badly. 

"What happened?" I asked him. 

"I took care of it." He shrugs. 

"Of what?" I asked confused. 

"You were upset and I took care of it." He says while looking me right in the eyes. 

"What did you do exactly?" I asked trying to hold how upset I was. 

Silvia begins cleaning up the bloodied tissues and other things she used to help him before getting up and leaving him and I alone in the room. 

"Why are you upset with me? He's the one who lied to you and went back to his old lifestyle without telling you. Not to mention putting both you and Charlie's lives in danger." He says while standing up and walking towards me. 

"You don't understand." I try and defend Cade. 

"Don't defend him!" He snaps at me. "You're better than that!"

"It's really not what you think." I try and tell him. 

"I'm not listening to this." He shakes his head and starts walking passed me. 

"Wait." I tell him as I stop him by grabbing his arm. 

"What?" He asks with a clenched jaw. 

"Look, I appreciate you standing up for Charlie and me and I don't blame you for reacting the way you did, I thought the same too. But really, I think he's being forced back into the lifestyle."

"What do you mean?" He asks me confused. 

"This guy that he's working for, he has to be someone from his past, but Cade won't tell me who exactly it is..." I stop myself halfway while realizing that earlier he was trying to explain everything to me when I just snapped at him. "Oh my god." 

"What?" He asks. 

"I am such a bitch." I say out loud without thinking. 

"What are you talking about?"

"He tried telling me earlier and I just snapped at him. Then he gave me the printout of the EMAIL's..." I began talking out loud to myself, forgetting he was right there near me. 

"What EMAIL's?" He asks me. 

"Uhhh..." I began to say as I turned and walked over towards my purse on the counter and took out the printouts he gave me and handed them to him. "These." 

As soon as he takes them from my hands, he starts quickly looking them over. 

"You can tell that this isn't from you and that this was all forged checks, not to mention, the encryption on your email address."

"How do you know that?" 

"Because believe it or not I used to hack into certain systems back in the day." He explains and quickly looks up at me. "Well not anymore." 

"Better not." I tell him. 

"But I do know some people that I'm still friends with and that I still know who used to work for Cade. If you wan't, I can contact them." 

I think about it for a minute before answering. 

"Okay good because I need for Cade to believe that those weren't really from me." 

"Don't worry, I'm sure he knows. But, I will. Just not tonight, I'm tired and sore and I know that it'll be better if he sleeps off everything tonight." He suggests. 

"Okay." I agree. 

"You know, Cade really isn't a bad guy but, I just don't want to see you get hurt." 

"I know. And I won't." I smile at him. 

He smiles back at me and says goodnight before him and Silvia go upstairs to sleep while I lay in my bed, debating if rather not I should text or call Cade or just wait until he let's me know he wants to talk. IF he wants to talk to me even.
