Black and white. Grayscale. Old time-y. Whatever you want to call it, that was Evan Hansen's life. All day, every day, 24/7, since he was born. It's not fun.

Now, today started like any other day. Evan woke up, still bribing himself to wake up with the possibility of good grades. After flopping out of his black and gray sheets, he drags his feet to the other side of his room, picking up his light gray pill bottle, labeled "ANXIETY MEDS" and taking two white pills from the bottle. He continued to the bathroom, where he gripped another bottle, but this time labeled "DEPRESSION MEDS" and proceeded to take two of those as well.

Trudging over to the mirror, he saw a reflection consisting of an 18-year-old boy, pale gray hair, almost black pants, and a grayish-white tank top. The boy's hair was suffering from extreme bead head. Picking up a black brush and a tube of hair gel, he quickly fixed the mess and soon looked sharp.

Evan went back into his room to get dressed, picking up a black, gray, and white striped polo and some light gray slacks along the way. As he got to his bed, he gradually undressed and threw the clothes on, still half asleep and hoping he looked ok.

The rest of the morning was fairly normal. Evan looked to see if his mom was home, only to see her passed out on the couch. He hated her working conditions, she works too much and doesn't get paid enough for the work she does. Every day she got home, not even changed out of her scrubs, and falls asleep fast.

He walked over to the counter, picking up his keys. I know mom wants me to eat breakfast... but it makes me physically sick to eat this early in the morning. I'll stop at Jared's. Maybe. He thought on his way out.

-time skip to school-

Walking into his first-period class, choir, he was confronted by Kurt and his friend/soulmate Ram. They were best known as the school bullies.

"Hey, look! It's the soulmate-less freak. How's it going, having no one love you? No one will ever love you, you know that, right? You're a fucking freak. You jumped out of a damn tree for Christ's sake! Who would want to be soulmates with someone... who deserves to die?" They just kept going, unrelentlessly, non-stop. Evan slowly backed out of the room, trying not to have a panic attack, but to no avail. He quickly fled to his locker but had fallen. He had suddenly seen something his heart couldn't take.

Color.

Looking around, he saw rows of dark green lockers, a tan and black floor. He could see he was wearing a blue and navy striped shirt, with tan slacks and red shoes. He saw the gray doors of classrooms, and the baby-blue sky and green grass out the window, but he also saw a boy, very tall, dressed in all black. He was sprawled on the floor, as he had dropped his books and bag, but he was looking around with a very similar look of disbelief. As he was looking around, the boys' locked eyes and Evan could finally make out his face.

"Connor Murphy? Wh- When- How- I-I'm sorry I should- I should go..." Evan started to pick himself up when Connor stopped him.

"I don't know why you're sorry right now. You have no right to be. We just found our soulmates after 18 years of believing we didn't have one. Why are you sorry?" Connor pondered.

"B-because, you have to be-have to be soulmates with som-one who deserves- have to be soulmates with someone who d-deserves to d-die."

Evan succeeded in running away this time, leaving Connor flustered, confused, sad, guilty, and a wide range of emotions.

Dammit, Connor, the one person you've ever liked and you fucked it up. Good going.

-time skip a g a i n-

Evan reached his house and ran inside. "Meds, meds, meds, meds..." He needed his medication, as he never took it this morning. Only took it out of the bottle. However, he couldn't help but be baffled by how pretty the colors were. The green couch with white and gray pillows, blue water cups, and coffee suddenly looks so much more un-appealing by its color.

There was a sudden knock on the door. Evan walked to the door after getting his medication, and there stood his soulmate, Connor Murphy.

"Co-Connor you shouldn't be here r-right now-" He tried shutting the door, but the taller boy held it open. Placing a hand on either of Evan's shoulders, he said, "Evan Hansen. You are many things. You are nice, funny, and pretty cute, but you also can't believe in anything. When we ran into each other in the hallway, the world burst into color. For both of us. And you can't change that. We're soulmates. You do NOT deserve to die, for starters." Now, standing in the midst of the doorframe, stood a flustered Evan, and a choked-up Connor. "Evan, do you remember when I threw that printer at Mrs. Sawyer in 3rd grade?"

"Yeah, but-"

"That was the year I realized I liked you. I thought it would impress you."

"Connor, I like you too. I-I have since 5th. I'm s-sorry for my reaction, I just- I'm just surprised... is all." Evan had liked Connor for years. That was the truth. Surprised is a lie. Evan has trust issues and has since he was 7. He doesn't like strong relationships.

"Well... what if we get to know each other more before we date? If you want to, I mean." Connor didn't want to mess this up.

"C-Connor, we're soul-soulmates. I'm fine dating- fine dating now."

"In that case... Evan Hansen, long time crush, soulmate of Connor Murphy... will you go out with me?" Don't, screw, this, up...

"Y-yeah, I would love- I would love to!"

The boys walked into Evans house, as they were still in the doorway, and saw a wide-awake Heidi Hansen as the kitchen counter, coffee in hand and hair messy.

"So boys, how was your day?"
