Evelyn

Monday morning. Just great.

I had been crashing over at Liz's place since Saturday after her parents let me. I explained my problem to them and, thankfully, they welcomed me with open arms.

The day was gloomy all through. I had woken up to a cloudy sky and a chilly draft in the guest room. I sighed as I got up and looked at my phone. I had forty minutes to get to class.

I walk into my History class and sit down at my usual seat. No one looks up, after all, I'm not the popular type.

I look around and notice Sapphire Williams all over some guy in the back of the class.

She was twirling her hair and everything, thinking it would turn the guy on... sadly, it didn't. The guy looked as disgusted as ever. He seemed kind of familiar though.

I studied Sapphire's victim for a while until the door flung open and our teacher, Ms. Teqille, walked in.

Her eyes were always hidden behind thick rimmed glasses, and she smelled of booze. Anyone could tell she'd been through a long-affecting breakup by just looking at her. At least, we all did.

She set her purse down on her desk and sighed, slouching down onto her chair. Everyone waited for the usual routine of her pulling out her iPhone and playing Candy Crush for a while until she gets super absorbed and completely forgets about the lesson. After this, the bell will go off, and she'll say, "Damn, that was fast..."

Five minutes elapsed and everyone was already catching up with their besties. I glanced out the window like I usually did during History. Saturday's events ran through my head, pulling me into a rather gloomy trance.

"I don't freakin' care! You wanna stay out? Fine. Sleep wherever your stupid head tells you to, and don't bother coming back. Your dumb presence isn't needed in my house!"

I was snapped out of my trance when I felt someone's hand on my shoulder.

I turned around, only to see... "Ethan? You go here?" I asked.

He smiled and nodded. "Yeah...I've actually never seen you around either."

Awkward silence was thick in the atmosphere.

I found myself staring at the Supreme label on his shirt and suddenly, he broke the silence. "Look, you were there at Liz's sleepover, right?"

I nodded my head confusedly.

"Then...was any of your friends crying about something to do with her dad?"

My heart skipped a beat. "W-why?"

He licked his lips. "Well, I don't know...it's weird. I just wanted to know if she was okay or whatever. I was thinking about it a lot."

I tried not to burst out into tears. He actually cares...

"Uh, yeah! She's actually doing much better now. Her dad let her back home..."I said, lying through my teeth.

He nodded. "Cool. Okay then, I don't really know who she is, but it's good to know she's okay. No one deserves that, you know?"

I nodded and plastered a fake smile on my face.

"So...I guess we go back to stranger mode?" He said, obviously feeling kind of weird.

"I guess so."

"Well, see you later...and by the way! Sorry about the whole bumping-into-you-and-breaking-your-glasses thing. That was pretty crappy." He said.

"It's all good."

He smiled that cool kid smile. "Great. Well, bye then..."

"Evelyn. Evelyn Velasquez."

He waved and walked away. I went back to my usual daydreaming.

Except this time, I was dreaming about a guy who was the only person who cared about me.

And he didn't even know.
