As we settled for the evening, my mother pulled me aside in silent glee.

"I know I soumd crazy- well I usually am- but your father, Ra himself, will be riding his sunboat down the Umderworld. In five hours we'll have to pack and leave. But this time,"she began, making me anxious to know as what she would say next. "You will be making the portal."she said.

My eyes widened and I nodded. Making a portal is tricky, and if I do it at the wrong time...

"It'll be okay."she said, hugging me. I took in a deep breath and looked at the goddess Bast and Neith who were sitting at the edge of the end of the river, chatting quietly and sometimes glancing at me with a smirk or sadness.

I looked down at my feet, then felt my mothers hand lift my chin up. "Chike, why don't you go and rest?"she asked rhetorically. "Because I can't."I said, answering her unasking question.

She rolled her eyes and pushed my shoulder lightly. "Go somewhere."she said and chuckled a little, then bursted out laughing when she saw my face. "Fine. I'll go somewhere when I open the portal."I said and Bast clapped.

"She is on a roll! Well not that but you- you know what I mean...."She said at a laughing Neith. "Did you just stutter?"she asked.

Bast looked away stubbornely but her hair puffed up as she heard a rustle in the bushes nearby. I rolled over to my bag and pulled out my gleaming khopesh, which was glowing in anticipation.

The intruder came out of the bushes and it was a couple, maybe our allies. "Dane, Nala! You scared us!"my mother exclaimed, rushing to the couple and crushing them with a hug.

They laughed and coughed, trying to pull away. "Catherine. Cath!"Dane yelled as my mother crushed his neck with hugs and smothered kisses on Nala's cheek. "Mom, chill!"I said, pulling her away. I put away my khopesh and stared at the couple in comfusion.

My mom wiped a tear from her eye and sniffed. "Gods of egypt, I love family reunions."My mother said and she smiled at me.

I raised an eyebrow and studied the couples features. Dane had my mothers warm brown, almost orange, eyes.

His defiant eyebrows might as well label him as a rebel. The girl at his side had snow white hair and pale skin. Her eyes were pale blue. Everything about her color was...pale.

"Uncle Dane? Aunt Nala?"I asked, figuring out the obvious in a couple of seconds. They nodded and Dane winked at me, walking towards me and giving me a hug.

"Hey, neice. This is my lovely wife, Nala. We have a lot to discuss but I can tell your tired. Rest, we'll talk in a couple of hours."he said and smiled at his wife and my mom.

"You sure? I can stay up..."I said, nkt wanting to miss the chance of meeting an unkown family member. "Im sure. Ra knows how long Ive stood up before in my life."Dane said and Nala chuckled. "Wonder why?"she asked rhetorically and he tickled her nose.

I nodded blankly and walked to my folded matress and got under its covers, glaring at everyone as they stared at me expectantly. "What?"I asked and they quickly looked away.

Dane immediately started to ask my mother questions and Nala talked with Nast and Neith, smiling as they explained things for her. My mother stuck out her tongue and once again I felt like a child, not allowed in adult activities.

I rolled my eyes and stared at the setting sky, watching as birds flew overhead. Stars began to glow and I thought if the goddess Nut then looked at the sandy area wr were in.

The God Geb misses his wife badly. But then I thought about Malcolm, and how bad I missed him. An ache in my stomach told me things I didnt know, though.

Where would they, the birds fly if we fail? Where will we go? When this battle, worse than the battle with Apophis, worse than the Trojan war the greeks fought is over, who will live? What if....

I shoke my head as I considered the thought I did not want to think and closed my eyes, forcing myself to sleep a dreamless dream.

"Chike! Wake up!"my mother whispered in my ear. I sat up slowly in irritation and looked at her. "I. Was. Sleeping. "I said and she held back a laugh.

"We let you oversleep for five minutes. Here, drink this."she said. She handed me a canteen with clear liquid in it. Perhaps water.

"What is this?"I asked cautiously. "Its water from Thoth."she said and walked away. I stared at it and took a sip at it, considering my dry and aching throat could use a liquid. A clean one, mind you.

My eyes felt 10x sharper, my thoughts more clear and...smarter. Well smarter than it already is. I coughed on the water in shock and stood up, drinking the rest of it quickly as everyine called for me to hurry up.

"Hurry up! It's almost time!"Nala said in glee. They all positioned me in front of a wooden artifact of an ancient pharoah and stood behind me.

"Repeat after me."my mother said, giving me a spell to make the portal work. I muttered the words as well and my mother said,"Chike, no!"

But it was too late.

My arm got sucked into a red portal and I screamed, using most of my intelligence to get away from it. It pulled harder and clawed at my legs. Everyone tried to pull me back, grabbing my shoulder or waist but the energy the portal emitted was too strong.

Too chaotic.

For a moment, it released me but an echoing voice laughed and when the force pulled me back again its was twice as much energy as it did before when pulling me.

"Chike...."the voice muttered. I screamed again and instantly, the portal sucked me away from everyone and everything.
