The funeral for my mother was unbearable for me, but I managed to take one last look at her pale face and still body.
Tears welled in my eyes and fought for release. I didn't want to break down. I wanted to appear strong.
Everyone dies. Even the ones you love, and it's when they're gone that you really feel the ache in your heart for their presence.
But I'm immortal. And we have the worst of lives when the people we love are gone, and we grieve longer. We may be young, and loved, but sometimes...
We just feel alone.
Wiping the tears from my eyes, colleagues of mom and a few friends hugged me, giving me sympathetic words. I shoke my head quickly when no one but the gods were looking.
They're mortal. In every moment, every second, hour, they could die. And that's what I was beginning to want. But I had a journey to attend and a job to complete.
"Catherine, was a great mother. A great friend, one to be trusted with your heart. The death of her is saddening, but we will all keep her in our hearts, for she will be lost if forgotten. Rest in peace, Catherine."The Father said.
I nodded to his words and tears trailed down my cheeks, falling down my hands as I crouched to place a flower on her tombstone.
"I love you, mom. Sleep in peace."I said and walked away slowly. In the shadows the gods watched over me, weary of any attacks that were likely to come on me as I am at my most vulnerable.
But they are wrong.
Old friends of mine, already forgotten, came up and gave me a hug. "We're sorry for your loss,"they murmured. "No, your not."I shoke my head and walked away, ignoring their stares of pity.
"Come on, Chike."Bast murmured. I followed after her and went in a limo, it luxurious cushions making my legs nearly invisible. "We'll be arriving at the throne of Anubis and Osiris soon. It will be a two day trip. Rest, Chike."Bast said comfortingly.
I nodded, dry tears on my face. I closed my eyes, the burning of not having slept for long in them. I ignored it and swept away from reality.

Jazz.
All I could hear was jazz along with a mixture of classical music, my mothers favorite blend. "Chike..."she whispered.
I tried to sit up but I felt as if I was air itself, not able to move. Suddenly her vision came clear to me, as she was just a blur before. "Mom?"I tried to ask but if felt like I would choke if I spoke.
"It alright, dear. Do you remember how Malcolm was Aphraim?"she asked. I tried to nod but she knew what my movement was.
"Good. His weakness. Love. He has never experienced it before, and you were the light to his cave. You make his knees collapse just by your name. But that also makes you a powerful weapon."she said, her voice suddenly strong and confident.
"He wants to marry you. Do not eat or drink what he gives you, Chike. And when the time comes, you know what to do. Take this necklace, and Thoth will explain everything with clarity. Goodbye, sweetie."she said and a necklace appeared on my neck.
"Mom. Mom!!!"I Suddenly managed to shout. She drifted away and the music blared louder.
"Mom!!!!"

"Chike."
Someone was shaking me awake and I muttered 'mom'. The person shaking me sighed and I frowned. It was quiet for a moment before I began to relax and fall back asleep.
Someone lifted me up, barely jostling me. I smelt...a library and fresh book scent on the person carrying me.
Cold air hit my skin and I cuddled closer to the person holding me, trying to get warm. He hugged me back sympathetically and then everything went blank.
My dream was dreamless and the only thing I could hear was music.
"Chike. Wake up."said a male voice. I opened my eyes unwillingly and sat up slowly, my limbs aching of having to stay still for so long. "Thoth?"I asked, looking into his multi colored eyes.
"Yeah. You alright? You may be a goddess but even gods need nutrition. Here, drink some water or something..."he said. He held me a glass and I stared at it.
"Chike."he began, sounding like he was trying to avoid an argument. I took the cup from him quickly and gulped the water down. I tried to get out of bed quickly but he set me down.
"You'll get a major headrush if you stand up quickly like that and pass back out. You know you've been asleep for a day and a half?"he asked.
I shoke my head, bewildered. "How flattering. What's been happening recently?"I asked.
He raised an eyebrow but quickly diminished it. "Nothing really. We'll be arriving at the Land of the Dead soon. Maybe two hours at the least?"he asked himself quietly.
"Great."I said and rocked myself back and forth on the bed. Out of the corner of his eye he stared at me. "Maybe you should take a shower, to wake up and refresh a little."he said.
He walked out of the room I was in and looked back at me, smiling sadly. He then left and closed the door quietly behind him.
I rubbed my hands on the silk bed I was sleeping on and looked around. This room is huge. But beautiful all the same. It had a small kitchenette for me, and a bathroom that looked as if it would be able to fit one small house in it.
I turned on the shower and let hot water run on me, thinking about what could and did happen throughout these pass few days.
I scrubbed my arms furiously, scabs from fighting in the battle coming off. I washed my hair and let the tears flow.
They couldn't stop. My life was horrible, and the one person who held it happy was gone. The person who I thought once was on our side was actually our opposer. I have just a few days to destroy him and find his shadow like his father. Or, I have to...
I didn't want to think about it so I jumped out the shower, drying myself and throwing on cotton pants and a crop top. Wearing my hair in a ponytail I walked out of my room to be surronded by balls of fire.
I looked around in amazement and Bast, along with Neith, ran to meet up with me. "Chike, your awake and fine! Come on, we have to meet Shezmu real quick."Bast said and grabbed my hand.
I scoffed and shoke my head. "Shezmu? The God of Blood and junk?"I asked rhetorically. "Yes, the God of Blood and junk. Come on, he'll let you in the gate's anyway since your the daughter of Ra."She said.
She grabbed my wrist and pulled me to the center of the ship, where the captain and Thoth stood, navigating through the lava and muck of the Land of the Dead.
"We are almost there."he said and the ship started to shake. "What's happening?"I ask. They all look to me.
"Shezmu wants to say hi."Bast said and looked as a beast loomed from the river, covered in blood. He had a lion like body along with a humans, and he was massive. Skulls were wrapped around his waist and so were pouches.
I revolted at his smell. "Ahh, the daughter of Ra! What brings you here, little princess?"he bellowed. I looked up at him and he crouched so we were at eye level.
"I am here to see Anubis and Osiris. We have to speak and arrange plans to save the world."I said professionally. He raised an eyebrow.
"Again? Is it true? He is..."he trailed off. I nodded. "We have to pass."I said. He nodded slowly and chuckled, moving out of our way. "May ma'at be with you!"He bellowed.
Indeed it shall.
