It had been three days since Sara's mum had left to her sister's house and Sara found herself crying alone in her room...again. Well, it wasn't really her room, but the spare guest room in Casey's house.
Casey and his family had been very hospitable, especially his mother Clara as she saw that all Sara's needs were catered for. She made her the yummiest of meals and always greeted her with a smile every morning and then late at night.
"You should be here," Sara cried into her pillow as she thought of her mum. "You should be making me breakfast and taking me to school."
But it was no use. All the crying in the world didn't do any good because no-one could feel her pain. No-one heard her cries for help, so, no-one came to her rescue.
She held it together in school, attempting to busy herself with work and the school paper. She paid very little attention in class, but it wasn't noticed by her teachers, or anyone else for that matter.
"Sara!" she heard a voice call her from downstairs. "Breakfast is ready honey!"
Clara. The oh-so-wonderful Clara! If it wasn't for Clara, Sara wasn't sure exactly how she would have coped. Casey and Bree were wonderful, they really were, but there was still plenty of hostility between the two, especially at meal times.
Wiping away her tears as best she could, Sara splashed some cold water on her face and hurried downstairs. Usually, she would skip breakfast, but Clara's cooking was too good to miss. Taking a place at the island in the middle of the kitchen, she smiled:
"Morning! Oh wow, this looks delicious!" she exclaimed, eyeing the stack of blueberry pancakes in front of her.
"Well, good morning to you too!" Clara returned the gesture as she placed a large bowl of fruit beside the pancakes. "I wish my own children were so cheerful in the mornings," she laughed as Bree stomped down the stairs and into the kitchen. She grumbled a greeting and hopped up onto a chair. "See?" Clara pointed at Bree and rolled her eyes.
Sara smiled and began plating a few pancakes as she handed Bree the bowl of fruit. "You okay?" she whispered at her. Bree nodded and sighed.
"Casey," she spat. "He's an absolute sh*t!"
"When is he not?" Sara replied, lowering her voice as she heard Casey roll into the kitchen.
"I'm hungry!" he growled, grabbing a few slices of bread and popping them into the toaster.
"So eat," his mother replied, sipping on some tea. "I made pancakes."
"Yes!" Casey huffed. "But I don't want pancakes!"
"Oh, sorry," Clara drawled, holding her hands up. "If I didn't know any better, I'd say he was on his period," she chuckled, turning to the two girls. Both Bree and Sara began laughing as Casey approached Sara aggressively.
"Oh, you think that's funny?" he spat in her face. An angry look came over him as he pointed a dangerous finger at her.
"Yes actually," Sara spoke up, unsure as to why Casey had become so uptight. "Yeah, it's pretty damn funny! Why?"
"F*ck you Sara!"
"No Casey, No." Sara flung her arms out in the air. "Don't bring your sh*tty little p*sstake attitudes in here and screw everything up for everyone else." She nodded towards his mother and Bree who were trying to shut their ears out to the little fued.
"This isn't even your house - I don't know why you're getting brave!" Casey went over to the sink and ran his hands under the tap in an attempt to calm down.
