Sara woke up to hear her phone beep on the bedside table. She groaned at being woken up so early and rolled over on her stomach to reach out her phone. The bright light from the screen blinded her as she blinked a few times before reading her messages.
There were two; one from Jasper and the other from Lana.
Jasper: since u have no work 2 do, im bringing some over at lunchtime. B ready! Or else... Sara rolled her eyes as she read Jasper’s message and moved on to the next one.
Lana: guess wht gf???? Im coming back 2moro, yay! Cant wait 2 c u soon Xox
Lana.
She was coming back tomorrow.
Sara felt her shoulders slump as she threw her phone back onto the table and dived under the covers. It was unusually cold that morning and she welcomed the warmth of the blankets with open arms.
Lana’s news didn’t really faze her – she didn’t feel overjoyed or sad, it was just Lana. They weren’t really as close as Lana’s exaggerated texts made out. Most of their conversations were based around the school newspaper, so, Sara brushed the thought out of her head and closed her eyes to sleep.
She needed to catch up on lost sleep before Jasper got her. She knew he would drill her for news about Casey so she was mentally preparing herself for it.
Considering she had been up for most of the night, she had managed to squeeze in a few hours of sleep. Her thoughts were occupied by her dad in the hospital, her mum who was hundreds of miles away and probably didn’t care about what happened to her.
She thought about Tyler and how she had treated him badly. All he wanted to do was help and she had pushed him away. It probably didn’t do much for his ego. In her head, she tried to ignore the parts where she thought about how good looking he was. His hair, his eyes, the way his strong muscles got tense as he became angry. The way he made her feel weak at the knees. She tried to push them to one side, but they were always there – always bothering her whenever he was around.
Then there was Jasper. Wonderful, wonderful Jasper. He had been so supportive of her, yet she wasn’t honest with him.
“Urgh!” she yelled out into her covers. “I’m such a b*tch!”
She was shocked to get a reply: “No you’re not – not really.”
She quickly sat up and shoved the covers off her body to find Bree standing in the doorway holding a glass of orange juice.
“For me?” Sara pointed longingly at the glass.
“Noooo,” Bree drawled. “You can get some from downstairs if you want.”
“You hurt my feelings,” Sara joked as she held a hand to her heart dramatically.
Bree laughed and came over to sit on the bed. “Anyway,” she played with the edges of the blanket. “What’s with the whole ‘I hate myself’ thing?”
“You wouldn’t understand.”
“Try me!” Bree said as she crossed her legs, making herself more comfortable. Sara shook her head and scrunched up her nose.
“I don’t really wanna’ talk about it,” Sara shrugged.
“Okay,” Bree sighed. “Well, can I ask you something then?”
“Sure.”
“Say you had a friend,”
“A friend? Okay, cool, so what happened to my friend?” Sara sensed a little edginess in Bree’s voice.
