“Sara! Slow the hell down!” he screamed out into the cold air of the night. He had chased her out of the back entrance of the diner.
“NO GODDAMIT! Leave me alone Jasper! You’re such an assh*le!” Sara shrieked as she tried to pull away from his grip.
“Why can’t you just explain everything to me?!” he yelled at her. “You’ve pulled some stunts in the past but what the hell Sara? Is this because of me? Is this my fault?!”
“WHAT?” Sara spat in his face. “How the hell did you come to that conclusion? You’re so drunk, it’s unreal!”
“Sara,” he tugged on her arm. “Sara, look at me – I’m not drunk!”
Sara shook her head and sighed. “You’ve been drinking. You shouldn’t drink like that, it’s unhealthy Jasper.”
“Stop changing the subject!” he glared at her. “Who’s the father of your child?” he demanded, the booming of his voice echoing in the night sky.
“GET OFF ME!”
“Not until you tell me what’s going on. Why are you pregnant?”
“I AM NOT PREGNANT!” she slammed down a fist on his chest. “Jasper, you’re hurting my arm!”
When he didn’t respond and the grip he held on her hand didn’t loosen, she let out a little whine: “Jasper, you’re hurting me!” she almost pleaded with him.
His pupils dilated with fear and he immediately let go of her arm. “Sorry. Sorry, I didn’t realise.”
Sara nodded and rubbed her arm before turning back to face him. “How could you Jasper? How could you think so low of me?”
“What?” he stood back startled.
“You heard me! How could you think I was stupid enough to do something like that? And how could you blame yourself even if something like that had happened? I’m not a baby J – I can use my brain for good sometimes,” she forced out a laugh.
“But I saw it Sara...”
“Then why didn’t you ask me?” she interrupted him. “That’s what normal people do Jasper. Y’know, when they’re trying to find out something, they ask.”
“But Sara, I saw the stick. I saw it Sara – it was in your bathroom.”
Ignoring him, she stared blankly ahead. “You don’t trust me.”
“What? No, no, of course I do. I trust you with my life. Are you stupid?”
“No Jasper – you don’t trust me,” she whispered through the pain in her body.
“Sara, what? What? No, Sara, no. I trust you,” he took hold of her hand but she pulled away from his grip and stood up to go.
“I’m not pregnant Jasper. I’m not like that. I thought you knew me better.”
“No Sara don’t do this. I’m going soon. Don’t end us like this. Just let me go, then be mad at me. Please Sara.” Jasper’s fists were clenched and he got up after her.
Sara could see the pain in his eyes but her own stubborn nature didn’t give way. They had been through so much and she didn’t want to end this way. She didn’t want to part with her best friend like this. It hurt so much and she felt an empty pang in her heart. The pain stung everywhere and brought a few tears to her eyes. The tears that held years and years of memories. And it all came down to this.
“Goodbye Jasper,” she heard herself say as she leaned in towards him and kissed his forehead. “Goodbye.”
Her words cut him like a sharp knife and all he could do was stand still in shock and fear. He was losing the best thing that had ever happened to him. All the times that they had spent together flashed immediately before his eyes. They had been so happy together, shared the best memories of their lives. And with tonight, it was all over.
