"All you two do is argue! Would you please just let me do my homework?"
Archie and Jughead closed their mouths as guilt spread across their tired faces. They hated making their daughter upset. Well, Jughead did.
Jughead worried about what he was teaching his daughter when he gave into Archie's foolishness or accepted the way things were even though it made him miserable. He worried about how his daughter viewed him or how she viewed relationships in general. Did she think he was weak because of his situation or did she understand?
Archie, on the other hand, just cared about being right. He didn't care about how his daughter felt about him or about their relationship as long as there was somebody around that knew the "truth" as he liked to call it.
It wasn't the truth.
"Sweetie, I'm sorry," Jughead apologized, his voice cracking as he walked towards the kitchen table and sat down next to April. "Do you need any help? Or would you just prefer we leave you alone?"
April kept her head down and her eyes trained on the paper. Her grip on her pencil was hard, her long nails digging into the palm of her hand. She opened her mouth and whispered, "Leave me alone."
Jughead nodded solemnly and got up with a sigh. He hated that this was his reality. He hated that this was April's as well.
As soon as he walked away, Archie followed, still heated about his own delusions.
"What's his name?" The redhead growled.
"You're delusional," Jughead yelled in a hushed tone as he made his way into his bedroom. Archie slept in the guest room nowadays.
"I know you're cheating on me," Archie snapped. "What's his name Jughead?"
But Jughead didn't have a name because he wasn't cheating. Archie had been accusing him of adultery for 5 years now with fake proof and invisible evidence. Archie would cry and throw a fit for a month of so, threaten to leave him, and make Jughead's life a living hell. Then, he'd suddenly turn into the sweet man Jughead married a long time ago. He'd take him out to dinner and make love to him. He'd say the right things and act like a husband. He'd act like a father.
Then he'd snap again.
Jughead didn't bother to disagree with him. He was so tired of having to prove himself to someone who wasn't willing to listen. He shouldn't have to.
"Can we not do this right now?" Jughead asked, his voice rising an octave as he sat down on his bed and hugged his pillow close to his chest.
"Can you be a good husband for once and answer to me? When I ask a question I should get an answer!" Archie continued on, fuming and making no attempt to lower his volume.
"April is doing her homework. Can you please, for her sake, let her have some peace and quiet?" Jughead begged, his eyes drooping. He was mentally exhausted. He wasn't sure how much more he could take of this.
"You just want to avoid the subject as always because you know I'm right."
Jughead wasn't sure how he got himself into such an awful situation. He didn't think there'd be an end in sight.
"I'm sick of seeming like the bad guy when you're the one out there hoeing around," Archie sneered, going off about instances that didn't happen and never would.
Jughead groaned and got up. He stormed off towards April with Archie following close behind. "C'mon," Jughead grumbled, tapping April's shoulder.
April looked up, sadness and concern plaguing her eyes. The page in front of her was still blank except for her name. She hesitated before asking: "Where are we going?"
