Benjamin laid on the ground staring at the clouds passing by. He heard everyone snoring around him. Beatrix every now and then would mutter a word. Bast would let out small snores. Jian would let out a large snore. He flinched when he heard crying.
He sat up looking around. The fire is now smoke flying up to the air. Anubis sat near the fire as he poked a stick inside the leftover firewood. Benjamin brushed back his hair, not knowing what to do. He frowned as he watched Anubis sitting there.
"Hey . . . are you okay?" Benjamin asked.
Benjamin found that being an older brother still hard. He could barely be nice to Beatrix most of the time. Benjamin is used to being rude. He is used to allowing people to see him being angry because he had too. Benjamin hated being near fake people.
Now, being near his cousins and twin . . . Benjamin could feel himself changing. He could feel himself being nicer to them.
Anubis wiped away the tears from his face, "Yes."
Benjamin frowned as he moved closer. He is thankful that Beatrix got extra clothes. Benjamin isn't a fan of the color blue but he will work with what he goes. Benjamin sat next to Anubis. Anubis looked at him with his dark red eyes. Tears fell down the small boy face.
"You don't look okay." Benjamin whispered.
"I miss my mother." Anubis said.
Benjamin looked at him, "Were you guys close?"
"Very. She is the reason why I'm not the stereotypical dead raising evil man. Mother saved me."
"How much do you know about Brick?"
Anubis shook his head, "Mother never said anything about him. She only said that his name is Brick, he was a hero but now he's not."
Benjamin snorted, "He's not greatest guy, I agree with that. You mother is smart."
"Was."
"Huh?"
Anubis stuck his finger in the leftover soot, "Was. My mother was murdered."
Benjamin didn't say anything. He looked at Anubis waiting for him to say something. Anubis pulled out his finger from the leftover soot and traced the grass. Benjamin watched the small boy write something. Every now and then Anubis would put his finger back in the leftover soot and wrote something else.
"Anika murdered her. Right in front of my eyes." Anubis whispered. "I should have never raised Jian. Mother warned me if anyone ever figures out my power then they would be after me. I should have listened to her."
Benjamin frowned, "I'm sorry."
"It's okay. Mother told me that one day I will save myself but I was stuck there. For two years, raising the dead for Anika. After that horrible war on the town, I could not stop raising them back." Anubis sighed. "People . . . their memories. I can feel them plaguing me. I can see their all happy, sad, worst memories. I can feel all their pain when I bring them back from death."
Benjamin nodded, "Beatrix looks like she isn't going to let anything happen to you."
"I am thankful." Anubis muttered.
"Have you gotten any sleep?" Benjamin asked as he took off his jacket.
Anubis shook his head no.
"Then get some. I'm sure we can kill time." Benjamin said.
Anubis looked at him with his eyebrow raised. Benjamin just lightly pushed Anubis on the ground. Anubis gave a short yawn. Benjamin laid his jacket over the smaller boy. Within seconds, Anubis fell asleep. Benjamin sighed as he brushed back his nappy hair.
