Chapter 17 - A Change of Look
Lety met Carolina at the optical store. She had a copy of her current prescription but it was almost two years old. She thought it might be necessary to update it. Plus she was thinking about getting contact lenses too. It took most of the morning to be retested, but at the end of the appointment, Lety had in her possession, not only a new pair of fine rimmed glasses that were barely visible on her face but a pair of contact lenses and paraphernalia tucked away in her purse for later. Carolina had helped Lety apply light makeup for the morning and then explained to her how she could enhance the makeup for going out that night.
Lety had chosen one of the new skirts she had purchased along with one of the blouses. There was still an innocence to her clothing. They were modest, with the ruffles she liked to wear, but the shirt looked sophisticated with the ruffles instead of as if it was made for an old lady. The skirt actually fit her shape instead of drowning it. When she had come downstairs that morning and her father had seen her outfit, it was obvious that he did not like it. But he could not find anything wrong with it. Lety thought that perhaps that was the best compliment, he could see that she looked more attractive and yet, she had not gone so far from her normal that he could point out what was wrong. He did however complain about her hair. That proper girls wore their hair tied back and not loose. Lety laughed at the comment, explaining that it was the 21st century and that there was no impropriety in leaving ones hair loose. Her mother on the other hand had complimented her to no end and had asked her all about her shopping trip and everything she had bought and the tips that Dona Carolina had given her.
With the little bit of makeup and the new glasses, Lety saw a new person in the mirror. She knew she wasn't a great beauty but she wasn't unpleasant to look at either. She smiled at herself. How had she had not realized that a look like this was in her reach? She thought back to the words of the clairvoyant and his statement that feeling ugly had been one of the problems in her life. She realized that there was truth in his words. As long as she felt ugly, she would be ugly. But now, she felt loved, and that love shone on her face and glowed in her eyes. She may never be a great beauty, but she felt that maybe one day, she would stop being La Fea.
