You and kathy walked into the building sitting down you ordered your food and drinks. As you handed the waitress your menu and fixed the napkin on your lap. You looked directly at Kathy. "Why are you looking at me like i am made if glass?" you asked. "I was in the Air Force you know." she looked stunned for a second. "Really?!" She asked. "I mean cool, but are you okay? I know Sarah can be a hand full." She chuckled. "She is very dramatic which I guess is a good thing, but not all the time." You just looked at her. "I don't know. Sarah's really cool and all, but i've known you guys for like two days." you sighed. "I just feel bad for her. You know? I mean what Holland did to her...." you trialed off. "I would have done the same thing." You looked at your phone. Hopping for a call or at least a text from Sarah. "Give her time." Kathy said taking your phone and putting it in her bag.At that moment they brought out your food and drinks. Kathy ordered parmesan chicken and some red wine. While you ordered a ceasar salad and a martini. "Yum!" Kathy said before taking a sip of her wine and digging into her food. All you could do was laugh. "What?" She asked "Literally nothing. Just you and food." you laughed again. Feeling all of the tension you had before slowly disappear as you started to relax and have a little fun.
You took a bite of your food. "Damn I see why you acted like that now!" You said. "This is amazing!" You both laughed. Kathy held up her glass. "Cheers!" She said as you clanged your glass against hers. She was easy to talk to. Like the best friend you never had. "To a hopefully great friendship!" You said. "Yes!" she said taking a huge drink of her wine, and you finished off your martini asking for another. You handed it to the waitress. "Can I please have another?" "Of course mam." She said taking the glass and bringing back a full one with some extra olives on the side. "The table next to your said to give you extra olives because you like them?" She questioned. "Oh my god!" you said turning towards Kathy. "That's my ex, and I may be a little tipsy." you said taking her arm and dragging her over. You haven't seen Billie since a week before you left for the Air Force base in Ohio. "Hey. Maybe we shouldn't." Suggested Kathy. "We'll be fine." you said stopping in front of Billies table. "Hey!" She said standing up. "Oh my god how are you?" She asked taking a look at your hand in Kathy's grip. "I'm good. You?" you knew that she saw and you didn't care. Billie broke up your last relationship by paying someone to sleep with your ex so you would get back together with her. "I'm okay. I actually do have to go now, but it was nice seeing you." She said hugging you. "Bye!"
You and Kathy walked back to your table. "What was that?" She asked "That was my ex Billie. She broke up my last relationship by paying someone to sleep with my other ex so we would get back together. I didn't know about that till a week before i left for Ohio." You took a sip of your martini. "I dragged you over there so she would know that I knew about it and wouldn't bother me again." You took another sip. "I am sorry. I hope you don't mind." You laughed. Eating your olives you finished off your salad. "No I don't mind. Sarah does that stuff sometimes too." You both laughed. As you and Kathy were finishing off your food and drinks the waitress brought over the check. Kathy gabbed it before you could even move. "No please let me pay." You pleaded. "Nope. I got this one. If you want you can leave the tip on the table." She gestured towards the table. "Fine, but I am paying for the next one." You took one last sip of your martini before standing up. "I am going to go outside and wait." You said. She shook her head and you walked out. Standing against the wall you took out another cigarette. Lighting it you let your mind wonder. Is she okay? I wonder what she is doing. I hope she isn't mad at me. You let your mind cloud with thoughts of Sarah as you smoked. Tapping the ashes off you turned towards the door. Making sure Kathy wasn't coming. Thankfully it was just a nice elderly couple. You finished off your cigarette as Kathy walked out the door. Throwing it onto the floor so she wouldn't see you turned towards her. "Thank you for lunch today." You said giving her a hug. "But can I please have my phone back now?" you asked letting her go. "Ugh. Fine, but please promise me you will give Sarah her time. That is all she needs right now." She grabbed her arm gently but with purpose. "I promise Kathy." You said giving her one last hug before walking to your car.
On your way home your phone started to ring. Looking down at your phone you saw that it was Sarah. You pulled over.
Sarah- Hey...Can you come over?
You- Yeah sure. Are you okay?
Sarah- i just don't feel to great and don't wanna be by myself.
You- Okay. i will be over in a few minutes.
Sarah- Okay, but please hurry.
She sounded distant almost like she was whispering. Or like she was falling asleep. You put the phone on speaker and started driving towards her house.
You- Sarah can you stay on the line with me?
Sarah- Yeah. Sure. (She sounded unsure)
You- Okay good. Can you tell me whats wrong?
Sarah- EVERYTHING! Dear god. Everything is wrong. I just want things to go back to the way they were. When things were easy. To when I didn't even know Holland.
You- Are you crying?
Sarah- Can you please just hurry?
You- Yes I am coming down the street now.
Sarah- Okay Goodbye.
She hung up the phone. You pulled into her driveway. Seeing her in her living room you let out a sigh of relief. You had thought something happened. Thought she had done something to herself. YOu walked to the front door. Knocking you put your keys into your bag. The door opened and Sarah fell into your arms. Moving forward you shut the door. At the point Sarah was getting heavy so you moved to sit on the floor. Her head was on your shoulder. You could feel her shaking. Sobs raking her body. You rubbed her back. Slowly moving your hand up and down, left and right. After a while she started to calm down. "Are you ready to talk?" You asked. She shook her head yes. You helped her up and you moved into the living room. Where you set her on the couch.
"Please talk to me?" You begged. " I can't help if you don't talk." She looked at you, not knowing what to say. You could see the sadness in her eyes. You could see how much she just wanted to break down her walls and just crumble. But you knew she wouldn't. She was like you in that way. You wouldnt let the walls break either. "I'm broken." She said before she leaned in and kissed you.
