Heat is the enemy to a good and comfortable sleep.
This is the only reason I hated summer and now I hate it ten times more. It isn't even the peak of the season and the warmth that wakes me leaves me already in a groggy mood. However, it takes me only seconds to realize that summer has nothing to do with my waking up.
As my eyes flutter open, my mouth ready to let out a groan, I have to stop myself once I see what's in front of me, or rather who. A peacefully sleeping Devon.
It's way to early for my heart to have this type of reaction to him, but it doesn't care, apparently my wellbeing is ignored for the boy beside me.
His arm, the cause of all my heat, is draped over my waist and even though it might look it stays there lazily, the pressure it has on the spot tells me otherwise. His lips are slightly parted as he breathes slowly, his features relaxed and he looks calm.
In this moment I come to the realization that I would do anything in my power to have him be this calm even when he's awake. He's been through enough and I don't want any more burdens on his shoulders.
A drop of sweat slides over my forehead, breaking me out of my sightseeing and reminding me why I woke up in the first place.
Taking a deep breath, I gently push his arm away in an attempt to free myself, but, just as I think I have a chance at succeeding, he immediately returns it to its previous position. I try once more and this time it doesn't budge at all.
Huffing, I decide to go for plan B. Grabbing his wrist gently, I do my best to lift his arm enough for me to slide away, but the result is the same as before. Just as I pull his hand high enough, his other one slides underneath me and pulls me flush against him.
"You really should learn to give up Evie."-he speaks in a hushed tone, his voice sounding gruff and still sleepy. It's beyond cute and I can't help the smile that breaks on my face.
"If I did so, now you wouldn't have been here."-I respond back and his eyes open to look at me.
Yup, sleepy and just woken up Devon is my weakness. I mean, all of him is a weakness for me, but this, him like this is the definition of a heart attack. The flush on his cheeks, the pink of his lips, the lazy look in his eyes. Damn it, my heart really can't take this.
"Maybe your right, maybe not."-he responds before closing his eyes again and snuggling me closer to him.
He stops when I push at his chest, my brows furrowed at his response as I try to decipher his words.
"What do you mean by that?"-I ask to which he sighs.
"Listen, can we talk a little later about this? I was having a pleasant sleep a few minutes ago."-he says annoyed without even opening his eyes as he tries to pull me closer again, but once more I resist.
"Yeah, well, it was the same for me until a hell like heat woke me up."-I snap at him, watching as the corner of his lips turn. "Now spill."-I slap his chest impatient.
"Later Evie."-he breathes and causes my temper to perk its head.
"Now Devon."
His eyes fly open, narrowed at me and even though I am getting pissed at him, the heat in them does funny things to my stomach.
"I said..."
"Everything, but an answer to my question."-I cut him off with an arched eyebrow and this time he successfully pulls me to him, almost pulling me half underneath him.
"Listen, sunshine..."-he whispers in a husky voice and I feel a new wave of heat cover me. "If I say later, then..."
"EVS!" My name is shouted, followed by a hard bang on the door.
