You wandered aimlessly, hands in front of you in the infinite darkness. Well, the world wasn't infinite darkness, per se, but to you it may as well be.
You couldn't see the world and you often wondered what it was like. Your parents and limited friends would tell you how amazing everything was. How amazing everything looked.
Shaking the thought as your hand met the rough bark of a tree, you used your hands to feel around for a long branch or something to use as a support cane. To make sure you didn't fall off a cliff or something. Or trip over a root. Or break your ankle in a hole. Or—
You grabbed onto what felt like a solid branch that you felt toward the base of the tree. It was already broken off, so that made things better for you. And easier.
A sigh of relief escaped you as you picked up the long branch and used it to tap the ground in front of you.
To be honest, you didn't really know what you were going to do now. You didn't think that you'd ever find yourself alone in the woods without an adult to guide you back home.
But your parents didn't want you at home, and they had made that pretty clear. They'd been arguing and one of them brought you into it. Things got pretty heated, to say the least, but you never thought they'd kick you out.
A shaky breath passed your lips as you walked forward, using the branch often to ensure your safety. The rustle of branches met your ears and you weren't sure how long you had been out there in the first place.
But the ground shaking beneath you made you stop. An earthquake? Those weren't common.
Your breathing picked up as they got more persistent. And stronger.
You stumbled toward a tree, scared, hoping it was close. You'd never been alone during an earthquake before. It was too much. What were you supposed to do.
Your hands searched for the bark and you gasped as you touched it. You dropped your sticks and used both arms to wrap them around the trunk. You trembled in time with the ground and held on tighter.
You heard a gasp. It was rather loud, though you didn't have long to question it as you felt something brush against your shoulder.
You cried out and felt the pressure retreat quickly.
"I-Is someone there?"
Silence followed. You looked around, though it was useless. Your sightless eyes glanced right over the giant face looking at you in concern.
"Um, hello there." You jumped at the voice and squeezed the tree trunk tighter. It continued, softer, "I must look scary, but I'm not here to hurtcha."
You shook your head slightly. "I, um, I can't..."
He seemed to understand and his gaze softened even more.
"Oh."
You bit your lip and shifted, letting out a cry as something—were those fingers?—wrapped around your middle. They encircled your waist and tightened a bit as your feet left the ground.
"Hey—Wait—What—" You stumbled over your words, panic gripping your heart.
You were gently shushed and lifted higher, tucked close to his chest. Realization and reality finally set in; you were in the hands of a giant.
An eerie sense of calm and silence overcame you. This giant hadn't hurt you.
Yet, a small voice inside told you, but he might.
"Who...who are you?" You asked in a small voice.
"I'm Ethan. Ethan Nestor."
"I'm Y/N."
"Are you...Do you need somewhere to be?"
"Not really."
"Want to come with me then?" He asked hesitantly, his voice quiet.
You pondered the question and smiled a bit at the thought of being safe and sound. You'd like that.
"Yeah. If that's alright."
Your smile widened as he nuzzled you. He held you close and began to walk.
For the first time in years, you didn't feel like he'd turn his back on you.
You'd never be blind-sided by him, pun intended.
