Smoke.
That was what woke you. That was the only warning you got that your entire life was going to change.
Coughs racked your body as you stood up in a room clouded with thick smoke, eyes frantically searching for an exit.
There. The window.
You quickly crossed the room, still in your pjs, and unpatched the window, popping the screen out. Another violent cough that made your lungs ache wracked your body as you slid out of the window.
You twisted your ankle in the landing but kept going, trying to just get away from the burning house you once called your home. A sob escaped you as you stumbled away from all you'd ever known.
Your vision was hazy, your lungs ached. You really didn't want to do anything but get somewhere safe. So you hailed a taxi.
The thought to even report what had happened hadn't crossed your mind until you were in the cab and on the way to your aunt's house.
You dozed off in the backseat. It would be a while anyway, so you might as well catch up on some sleep that you'd lost in the late night. Sleep came easier than you thought it would, but you welcomed it, sleeping deeply until the driver slammed on his brakes.
You flew forward in your seat until the seatbelt locked and yanked you back, your head slamming into the headrest in front of you before flying back into the seat behind you.
Smoke.
The vehicle was smoking. What the hell was it with you and smoke today?
You reached up hazily to your forehead, feeling something wet and slightly sticky as you pulled away. Your fingertips were covered in red.
You felt dizzy, hurrying to unbuckle the seatbelt as the smoke grew more intense. You opened the car door and stumbled out, seeing how the driver was hunched over the steering wheel. It made you feel sick.
There was something through his chest, and you swallowed thickly, your throat hurting like you'd swallowed glass.
And then there was the car—the car whose engine was smoking.
Your eyes widened as you saw a flame emerge from the busted hood of the taxi cab, knowing even in your exhausted state that that was bad. You tried to get far away, and you made some progress, but when the car exploded, it still sent you flying, air whipping around you.
You landed awkwardly on your shoulder, your vision darkening even before you're eyes closed as you slipped away. Was that a massive hand you'd seen approaching you?
~•~
You woke up on a soft surface, something wrapped around your ankle and an oversized band-aid on your scraped shoulder. You jolted as you heard a loud squawk, head whipping to see a gigantic bird in a cage.
Was that—?
"Ari?" A female's voice came from the other room, footsteps shaking you as they came closer. "Calm down, what are you even—" her eyes landed on you. "Oh."
You scooted back, stomach dropping. But you.. you recognized this person. Wasn't she supposed to be your size though? Had something happened to you? To her maybe?
The giant house around you told you otherwise. And as she approached you slowly, you felt even smaller, swallowing a lump in your throat.
"You're awake." She commented, looking a bit uncomfortable, as if she didn't know what to say as she lowered herself so that her face was at your level. Her chin rested on the nightstand you were on, wrapped up in a washcloth and trembling madly. "Sorry, I've never seen a human before. Not in person. They're supposed to be myth."
"Yet here I am." You piped up shakily, watching as her eyes lit up in wonder. "Y-you're not human?"
That shattered any idea that your size had changed. You simply weren't with one of your own kind.
The girl's brown eyes softened as she shin her head, biting her lip.
"I'm called a giant to your kind, I suppose. But to my kind, I'm called an Anima."
You simply nodded, though your head was still spinning.
"I, um, recognize you." You timidly shifted a bit closer to her curious face as she pushed dark hair behind her ear. "Y-You're Jaiden, right? From JaidenAnimations on YouTube?"
Her eyes brightened and she nodded. "Wow! I didn't know that it extended past Anima territory. Always nice to meet a fan... And you are?"
"Y/N." You replied, some tension leaving your shoulders.
As you spoke more, you both grew more comfortable, laughing. The awkward tension left the air, vanishing.
Like smoke.
