Dawn breaks, as the airship carrying Wendy and her friends approaches its destination. The third Phase if the Hunter Exam is about to begin. *Ding dong*. "I apologize for the long wait. The airship will soon arrive at its destination." Said Beans. Meanwhile on the top of the tower. "Ahem. Everyone, the exam's Third Phase will begin here, at the top of Trick Tower. To pass this phase, you must reach the tower's base alive. The time limit is seventy- two hours. With that, we will now begin the Third Phase. I will pray for your success." Said Beans. "So it's finally my turn? Said the man with the purple hair. "Best of luck to everyone!" Said Beans. Wendy looked down from the tower and looked how high it was. "Are we supposed to climb down?" Asked Leorio. "That would be suicide." Said Kurapika. A man started to laugh. "Maybe for a normal person." Said #86. #86 started to climb down the tower. "But a top-class Rick climber can handle this, no problem." Said #86. "Wow." Said Killua. "He's going down pretty fast." Said Wendy. "Looks like I'll be the first one to pass the Third Phase." Said #86. Then their was a huge flapping noise and #86 stopped climbing down. #86 turned around. Then came swarming was a Six Legged flying beast. #86 started to scream for help. "Stop! Stay away! Stop! Stop it!" Screamed #86. One of the Six Legged flying beasts grabbed #86 with its sharp teeth and that was the last of #86. "G-Guess we cant climb down the side." Said Leorio. "Yeah." Said Kurapika. Then Kurapika noticed something strange. "What's up?" Said Leorio. "There are fewer people around." Said Kurapika. "What?" Said Leorio. "I count twenty-three, which suggests almost half of the applicants have already found an exit." Explained Kurapika. "No way. When did they do that?" Asked Leorio. "That means there must be some hidden doors that lead below." Said Kurapika. "Kurapika! Leorio!" Yelled Wendy. Wendy was waving to get there attention. "What is it, Wendy?" Asked Kurapika. "Look. I found a hidden door." Said Wendy. Wendy pushes the floor and the tile goes down. "I see now. So we can descend by flipping the stones." Said Kurapika. "Okay! Great job, Wendy! Let's head down now!" Said Leorio. "But I'm confused." Said Wendy. "What is there to be confused about?" Asked Leorio. "There are also hidden doors here, there, over there, and over there as well." Said Wendy while she pointed at every direction. "That many?" Said Leorio. "Five hidden doors, located in the same area. It sounds suspicious to me. Some could be traps." Said Kurapika. "And it looks as though each door can only be used once." Said killua. "Seriously?" Said Leorio. "We tried opening a door someone else used, but it wouldn't budge." Said killua. "Judging by the door's size, only one can fit at a time." Said Kurapika. "In other words, only one person can use each door. We'll have to split up. Wendy and I decided that we're each going to choose a door." Said killua. "No hard feelings if one of us springs a trap! What are you guys gonna do?" Asked Wendy. "I can live with that. Luck is part of the game." Said Leorio. "I have no objection. Then that settles it." Said Kurapika. Wendy, Killua, Kurapika, and Leorio get on to a tile. "Let's go, on the count of three." Said Leorio. "I guess this is goodbye for now." Said Wendy. "We'll meet up again, at the tower's base." Said Kurapika. "Let's go." Said Killua. "One! Two! Three!" Said Wendy,Killua, Kurapika, and Leorio. Then the tiles flipped over and they landed on there feet. Well...except for Leorio. He landed on his face. And both of them were together and not separated. Wendy and Killua looked at each other and laughed. "That was quite a brief farewell." Said Kurapika. "Oh, so all the doors led to the same room." Said Leorio. Then there was a stand with five watches on the stand. Wendy read the instructions. "The five of you must follow the will of the majority to reach the goal." Said Wendy. "Five of us?" Said Leorio. "Look... There are five stopwatches." Said Wendy. "There's an O and X button." Said Killua. "Could it be that we won't be able to leave this room until another person drops in?" Said Kurapika." Then someone from the speaker spoke into the mic. "That is correct!" Said the speaker. "Who's that?!" Asked Leorio. "My name is Lippo. I am the prison warden here, as well as the Third Phase examiner." Said Lippo. "Prison warden?" Said Kurapika. "Multiple routes through this tower have been prepared. You have chosen the path of majority rule. Cooperation will be key if you wish to clear this phase of the exam. One person's selfish behavior can derail an entire group. And you can't start until you have five members. Best of luck, ladies and gentlemen!" Said Lippo. "We can't move on until someone else arrives? What do we do?" Asked Leorio. "We have to wait, I guess." Said Kurapika. Two hours later. "Oh, come on! It's been two hours. What if the others all took different routes? Only a fool would still be at the top of the tower!" Said Leorio. "Calm down, Leorio. Complaining won't help." Said Kurapika. "But...what if no one shows up before we reach our time limit? Hey!" Said Leorio. Wendy heard a noise up the roof. The roof tilted a little and someone came out. "Good grief." Said Tonpa. "Mr.Tonpa." Said Wendy. "Oh." Said Killua. "It's the old man." Said Leorio. Tonpa puts on the watch on his wrist. "Okay!" Said Tonpa. The stone wall door began to open and there was a sign. "So the door appears once five people arrive and put on the stopwatches." Said Kurapika. "At this door, select O to open, X not to open." Said Wendy. "Forcing is to use majority rule already? The answer should be obvious." Said Leorio. Everyone chooses the letter. O-4, X-1. "What? Who pushed the X button?" Asked Leorio. Tonpa laughed. "Sorry, that was me. I pressed the wrong button by mistake." Said Tonpa. "Stop screwing around, old man! Are you blind?" Said Leorio. "Like I said, it was an accident." Said Tonpa. "How can you accidentally press the wrong button?!" Said Leorio. "It doesn't matter. The door opened." Said Wendy. "No, it does matter! This guy deliberately pressed the wrong button." Said Leorio. "Let's go. We don't have time to bicker." Said Kurapika. "That's right. Even if he keeps pressing the wrong one, the rest of us just need to press the right one." Said Killua. "Fine." Said Leorio. "Okay, let's go!" Said Tonpa. "Damn." Thought Leorio. "Seriously. Another question so soon?" Said Leorio. "Which way do you want to go? O for right. X for left." Said Wendy. "Right...or left." Said Leorio. O-2, X-3. "Huh?! Wh-Why would you choose to go right? You always go left." Said Leorio. "That is true. Studies have indicated that people who are lost or stuck at forks unconsciously tend to go left." Said Kurapika. "I've heard that before, too." Said Killua. "Yeah, me too. My father would lecture me about going to the left when I would get lost." Said Wendy. "Wait! The numbers don't add up! Which button did you press?" Asked Leorio. "Right. Right. Right." Said Wendy, Killua, and Kurapika. "Y-You guys." Said Leorio. "That's why they chose to go right. To outfox the examiner. If the examiner knows that people tend to go left, the left path will be more difficult." Explained Tonpa. Leorio started to get irritated with Tonpa. The group kept walking and they find themselves to an arena. "Wh-What is this place?" Asked Leorio. "Look over there." Said Killua. There were five inmates on the other side. "The applicants have arrived. Remove the shackles." Said an orange man. The shackles on the orange mans wrist have slipped off. "Jeez." Said the orange man. The orange man took off his cloak. "I'm finally free."
"Allow me to explain, ladies and gentlemen. Before you are some of Trick Tower's prisoners." Said Lippo. "Prisoners?" Said Kurapika. "The Hunter Exam Committee has also officially hired them as examiners. You will be fighting against the five of them. The fights will be one-on-one. Each person may only fight once. You are free to use any method you like. There will be no draws. A win is declared when the opponent admits defeat." Explained Lippo. "You may pick your order. It's majority rule. So secure three wins, and you may pass. The rules are simple." Said the orange man. "Tsk. Majority rule again?" Said Leorio. "Well, I prefer straight forward rules." Said Killua. "However, the actual fights will not be quite so simple. The prisoners' sentences will be reduced by one year, for every hour they delay the applicants here. In other words, their goal is also to buy time." Said Lippo. "I understand. And we must reach the goal within seventy-two hours. So time will be critical during these fights." Explained Kurapika. "Okay, I'm up first. Choose your combatant!" Said the orange man. "What should we do? He said that we can fight with any method. So that means anything goes." Said Killua. "We don't know what they'll try to pull." Said Leorio. "There's too much at stake without knowing what they have up their sleeves. Given that, I shall..." "No, I'll go!" Said Tonpa. Kurapika was interrupted by Tonpa. "Mr.Tonpa?" "I'll act as a guinea pig, so we can discover what they're up to. Consider this an apology for before." Said Tonpa. "Hey, are you serious?" Asked Leorio. "Sure. Plus, you guys don't actually trust me, right? Do you really want me to be the tiebreaker, when the score is 2-2?" Said Tonpa. "You have a point." Said Leorio. "Then it's settled." Said Tonpa. "Tonpa, you're." Said Leorio. The orange man smiled. Tonpa takes off his bag and puts it on the ground. The orange man and Tonpa start to walk forward. "Now, let us determine the method of combat. I propose a death match." Said the orange man. "A death match?" Said Wendy. "They fight until one dies?" Said Leorio. "No. Don't let him provoke you!" Said Kurapika. "Well?" Said the orange man. "Very well. I accept!" Said Tonpa. "Seriously?" Said Leorio. "I commend you for your courage!" Said the orange man. Both the orange man and Tonpa are in fighting positions. "T-Tonpa." Said Leorio. "Let the fight begin!" Said the orange man. The orange man heads for Tonpa and getting ready to attack him. "I...give up!" Yelled Tonpa. "Huh?" "What?" Said Killua and Leorio. Tonpa is bowing down. The orange man stops where he is and faces Tonpa. "Did he just give up?" Asked Wendy. "M-Maybe he meant give me a sec?" Said Leorio. "What did you just say?" Asked the orange man. Tonpa did an awkward smile. "You win if I admit defeat, right? I give up. I lose!" Said Tonpa. Then Tonpa started to laugh. "Wha...Wha...Wha." Said Leorio. The orange man started to laugh. "All right. I win this round." Said the orange man. One point for the prisoners. "If we win two more rounds, you lose. You won't be able to advance or turn back. You'll be stuck here until the seventy-two hours are up. Should that come to pass, our sentences will be reduced by seventy-two years." Explained the orange man. Then the orange man walked away laughing. Tonpa walks back to his team. "Man, that was a disgrace. He looked a lot stronger up close." Said Tonpa. Then Leorio got Tonpa's shirt and put up his fist at Tonpa. "Bastard. You just confirmed all my suspicions! You're a worthless piece of trash, who's only good for sabotaging other applicants!" Said Leorio. "Exactly. That's what I do every year. And I plan to continue the tradition." Said Tonpa. "Wh-What?" Said Leorio. "I'm not looking to pass the Hunter Exam. I'm only in it for the thrills." Said Tonpa. "The thrills?" Said Leorio. "Yes. The Hunter Exam is a trial meant to crush confident young people's dreams. The moment of despair, when ambition and hope give way, gives me a sense of exquisite pleasure. Especially when I'm actively shattering these rookies' dreams. I don't plan on becoming a Hunter. I've already had enough fun this year. It's time for me to bow out." Explained Tonpa. "You bastard." Said Leorio. "Stop, Leorio!" Said Kurapika. "But." Said Leorio. Kurapika modded. "They want us to waste our time, fighting amongst ourselves." Said Kurapika. Everyone looked at the prisoners. "However, If their goal is to buy time, then the old man made the correct choice. That bald guy is probably a former soldier or mercenary. Had you fought him, he would have started by crushing your throat, so you couldn't have given up. Then he would have tortured you, without killing you, for the rest of the remaining time." Explained Killua. "My plan was disrupted. I was going to take my time, punishing him." Said the orange man. "Don't worry. Everything will be fine." Said an unfamiliar man. The mans handcuffs have been taken off. The man took off his cloak to reveal himself. "If we defeat two of the remaining four, then we win." Said the unfamiliar man. "I choose the little squirt." Said the unfamiliar man. The man pointed at Wendy. Tonpa's actions have placed Wendy and her friends at a disadvantage. What is their next opponent, Bora, planning to do in this match? At the start of the Hunter Exam's Third Phase, there were 40 applicants. With 1 eliminated, only 39 remain.
