Over the next few weeks, Bane spent his time exploring the Underworld, occasionally accompanied by his father or Thanatos.
He watched as souls were judged and got to know some of them. One lady was sent to Asphodel but was so tired that she fell over. Bane helped her up and wrapped her arm around his neck. She was so surprised to find out that he was the Prince of the Underworld that she stammered so badly he couldn't understand her.
"It's alright," he told her as he accompanied her to the meadows. He was expecting a large wheat field but found a small rustic village surrounded by farms
"This is me," the lady said when they reached a tall ten-storey house. Bane helped her up the steps and opened the door to find a multitude of people all clamouring for her. Bane gave her over to a man, presumably her husband, and watched from the door as the lady picked up two young toddlers in her arms.
He knew they wouldn't age, as they were already dead, but they would grow up as they would have if they were alive. But it still saddened him to see toddlers in the kingdom for the dead. But at least they were together now.
As he walked back towards his father's palace, he was greeted by 'my lord' and 'sire' from those who dwelt in Asphodel. Bane learned that if Hades didn't want you to reach his palace, you would keep on walking forever without ever reaching it. But it only took Bane twenty minutes to reach the front gates. At a certain angle, it looked like a lavish mansion with its beautiful gardens but at other times, it looked like a true castle of black stone with the palace standing proudly on the top. When Bane passed through the gates, Cerberus bounded up to him. The father of Hellhounds knocked Bane over, covering him in three heads worth of saliva.
But when Bane wiped it away, he found that he wasn't in front of the palace. He was on what seemed to be an old wooden bridge that was rotting in places. Bane looked over the side into a deep chasm. Small pinpoints of light twinkled down in the darkness while the cliffs on the side of the bridge held caverns that glowed with the light of a fire but were barred by gates of steel.
"Uh...Cerberus?" Bane asked nervously, "Where are we?".
His answer was just a frightened whimper coming from Hellhound. Bane looked around to see Cerberus backing away from the bridge slowly. The head on the right was growling at the caverns on the side while the middle head had his head down low, whimpering. The head on the left was looking directly into Bane's eyes with a desperate plea.
Cerberus was afraid! Bane thought with alarm, And whatever makes the guard of the Underworld want to run back home CAN'T be good.
But something held him back. Some presence in the back of his mind that made him thought, I wonder what's down there?
"Go back," Bane told Cerberus, "I'll be back in a few moments". And without waiting for the three-headed wolf to decide what to do, Bane leapt over the side of the bridge into the darkness.
