"Okay. So I have good news and bad news. Which do you want first?"
I listened to Sam and responded, "Good news first please?"
"Okay. The good news is that I will definitely be coming to meet you."
I stayed silent waiting for the bad news to come.
"And the bad news is that it won't be as soon as I thought it was going to be. I promise Scar, I will come meet you as soon as I can. I promise."
I let out a sigh. "It's okay. I was just hoping you'd be here for the first baby doctor appointment."
"Wait. When is it? I might be able to make it on time."
"You probably won't be able to. It's in like 3 weeks. It's on November 4th."
"Yea. You're right. I probably won't. Can you just take Jay with you? I'm sure he'd love to go with his sister for her first ultra-thing."
I laughed lightly, "I'm sure he wouldn't mind if I asked nicely."
"I'm sorry Scar, but I gotta go. I've been on my 1o minute break for about 35 minutes now."
"Sam, go back to work. I'll talk to you soon okay?"
"Of course. Have a good day Scarlett."
With that, Sam hung up. It's been a few weeks since I found out I was pregnant and I still haven't told my mom. It just seems like every time I try to tell her I get too nervous and chicken out or when I say I'm gonna do it she's off doing something else.
I lay on my bed staring at nothing, just thinking. After a few moments of debating with myself, I decide that now is the moment that I'm gonna tell Mom. I stand from my bed and walk out in search for my mother. I walk into the kitchen to find her sitting at the small wooden table reading a magazine. I sit in the chair next to her and put my hands on the table.
"Hey Mom? Can I talk to you?"
She looks up and sets the magazine down, "Of course Honey. Is everything alright?"
"Umm, yea. I'm alright. I just need to tell you some news."
Her lips curl into a smile. The smile that I always loved to see on my mother's face. "Oh alright. Go on."
"I just wanted to let you know that you're gonna be a grandma." As I speak I look at my hands, when I finish I look at Mom.
Her face has gone from happy and smiling to blank and confused. "Scarlett. What are you trying to say?"
I sigh and look at her again. "Mom, I'm saying that I'm pregnant."
Her eyes become watery and one of her hands finds her mouth. I smiled and placed my hand on top of her's on the table. She took a few moments and gathered herself before speaking. "Now Scarlett. You can't just give me news like that and expect me to be okay right away. Now before we talk about anything else, who is that father?"
"You know the guy we talked about when I first came back from New York? Sam? Well he's the dad."
Her eyebrows furrow as she scans my face. "But you told me that you two weren't together."
"That's the thing. We aren't. It's just complicated really."
"Does he know about this?"
"Of course. I wouldn't hide this from him. I mean this is his baby too."
"Well is he gonna help and support you through this? Cause I know guys these days like to do the dirty work then leave."
"No Mom. We've talked about it and as soon as he can, he's going to come meet me here so I won't be alone."
