Piper woke up to pitch black invading her vision. Night, again. She hadn't been able to sleep through the night knowing what she knew. It was all so overwhelming... And she couldn't tell a single soul about it. She hated knowing that because of her, so many people were in danger. It was pure agony keeping a secret that could ultimately save everyone she loved.Piper left the warmth of her bed to wander around the ship. Walking around helped her to take her mind off of everything, and to reminisce in old memories. Back when, despite what it seemed, life was easier.
She glanced into the dining hall, picturing Leo, Percy, and Jason all possessed by Eidolons. When she sang and charmspoke the spirits out of the boys. That was her victory, and something she took pride in.
As she walked down the hallway, she looked at each of her demigod friend's rooms. Annabeth's, and all of the countless times Piper was in there talking or crying or panicking. Annabeth just had a way with comforting those in need of comfort. Then came Frank's, her brother from another mother. He was like the protective, wise sibling that you could always trust to help you when you needed it. Sweet Hazel's room came next. Piper remembered all of the sword fighting lessons Hazel had been kind enough to give her, and all of the advice on how to be a better warrior. Piper would've been dead by now if it wasn't for her. Percy's room followed, and Piper lightly chuckled to herself. They had a very playful friendship, always teasing and laughing. So many inside jokes flooded into her mind, bringing a smile to her sad face. But, Piper knew that Percy was someone who would always have her back, no matter the risk. If only he knew what that could cost him now.
The last room, Jason's. She stopped in her tracks, taking it all in. She had been in there so many times, expressing worry and concern and every other emotion she could muster. He was too good to her; she didn't deserve him. He would always hold her, draw little circles on her hand with his fingers (which drove her mad, but in the best way possible). He always put her life before his, protecting her at all costs. A tear of happiness threatened to escape from Piper's eye as she thought about him. He was truly too good for this world.
The longer she stared, the more she started to realize that his door was slightly cracked open. She softly nudged it in, revealing a vacant bed with the covers thrown off. Piper went above deck in search of Jason, and found him. He was standing at the railing to her left, hands white from gripping the railing so hard. His eyes were searching the stars, the way Piper's were the night before. Searching for answers, pondering countless questions.
"Hey." She started to walk towards him. Jason turned his head slightly to see her. He looked exhausted; deep purple bags under his eyes, hair in every direction. He had a distraught facial expression, like he was faced with a decision he couldn't bear to make. It broke Piper's heart and she didn't even know what it was.
"What are you doing up? You should get some rest." There he went. Trying to turn the situation away from himself. Jason hated asking for help, or talking about his personal problems. He never wanted to bother anyone with them, not even Piper. She grabbed his hand and rested her head against his arm. His tricep tensed, but quickly released that tension. It was almost as if he had been holding something in for so long, and finally let it go.
"Can't sleep. I haven't been able to for the past couple of nights. But what about you? You're like a rock once you're asleep." Piper turned her head to look up at him. He was still searching the stars for an answer he'll probably never get. Jason gently kissed her hand.
"I had a dream. A bad one." He inhaled deeply. "Zeus-my dad, I mean- he was giving me a message. Well, more like an assignment. He was talking about how the gods are at war over the Chosen One." Piper's heart sank when she heard those last four words. "Half of them want to kill the Chosen One now and save the world from the potential risk, half of them want to utilize the Chosen One's abilities and protect the world. Either way, that requires the Chosen One's identity to be revealed. My dad wants me to find out who it is." Jason sighed.
"That's not too bad-" Piper started to say, but Jason cut her off.
"After I find out who it is, he wants me to kill them. To kill one of my friends. Pipes, what do I do? I can't kill one of my friends, I just can't. But the whole world is depending on me to do it."
Piper stopped breathing. Because of her, her own boyfriend was in distress. She knew what she had to do.
"Sounds like life would just be better without the Chosen One, huh?" A single tear finally escaped her eye as she said that. She let it roll down her cheek, until it reached her chin. She wiped it away.
"Yeah, no kidding. Nobody should be given that amount of power, much less a demigod. I can't imagine being in their position."
"Me neither." Piper lied. She turned on a little charm-something she hated doing with her friends.
"We should probably get to bed. Long day tomorrow, we need our rest." Jason straightened up.
"Yeah, w-we should." They still held hands as they walked below deck together.
They got to Jason's room. Piper squeezed his hand.
"Jason? Don't stress over what your dad said. Everything will be okay, I promise. It'll all work out. I love you." She kissed him and walked away. She couldn't look at him, knowing it was the last time they would see each other. Piper wanted to remember the good times, not the ones where Jason was upset over having to kill her. He called down the hall "I love you too, Pipes." Piper had to bite her lip to keep from saying something. From telling him she was forever sorry.
Once she heard his door close, she was already at hers. She closed the door as she was standing outside of it. As quietly as she could, she crept above deck once again. She knew that her and Jason weren't alone. Esmeralda had spies watching the ship around the clock. Piper could sense a presence listening in on their conversation. She stood in the middle of the deck and faced the night sky.
"I'm the Chosen One. I will sacrifice myself, in exchange for the safety of my friends and those you have kidnapped. Nobody else will get hurt. Swear it on the River Styx, and I'll go willingly." She looked around, waiting for a spy to pop up. To her right, a green fog filled the air. Within seconds emerged a curvy woman wearing a tight forest green track suit walking towards her. She had a smug look across her face.
"How am I to believe it is you? What proof do you have?" Esmeralda circled her, as if she was a prize she had just won.
"That test that Pollux did? It worked. I've never felt more pain in my life. I have a scar to prove it." Piper pulled down her shirt, revealing a lightning bolt shaped scar on her chest, where her heart was. Esmeralda coldly smiled at what she saw.
"Excellent. And deary, I promise on the River Styx that I will inflict no physical harm on to your friends. Chiron and Lupa will be released back to their rightful camps. As for you, come follow me, love." She reached out her hand for Piper to take. Piper looked back at the stairs, leading below deck. There was no turning back now.
As she grasped her hand, a green smoke engulfed her and took her away.
