I woke up the next day to the sound of horrendous weather- thunder, lightning, hailstones; the lot. I groaned as I was dragged out of my sleep and checked my alarm clock, which read as twenty three minutes past four in the afternoon. At this stage I would have usually been woken up by an argument between Total and Gazzy about something like what channel should be on the TV. Total was with Jeb and Mom at the Doomsday convention at the moment, but my point is still valid.
Thinking about it, I should have woken up earlier, although it didn't sound like anyone else was awake. Not that I could hear anything over the storm which was raging on outside.
I rolled out of bed and pulled open the blinds of my window to get a grasp of what was happening. It sounded like the sky was cracking, and I could barely see out of the window because of the rate pellets of ice were hammering down from the black clouds. At that moment, I was rather thankful we had double glazing.
Then something caught my eye- a few blurry silhouettes floating around, about 500 yards away. I squinted. Wait a minute- that looked like the flock. To verify this, I walked over to my door and opened it, finding Gazzy sprawled across the sofa with a bag of cool ranch Doritos, watching The Big Bang Theory. Nudge was asleep on the other couch, and Iggy appeared to be listening to music on his blue iPod shuffle. I had no idea where Dylan was, although he was most likely in his room.
Who the heck was outside? It probably wasn't that important but my natural curiosity wasn't going to let this one go. I went back into my room and shoved on a (hopefully) waterproof black hoodie, intending to investigate. I nearly slid out unnoticed, until Dylan stopped me.
"Good morning sunshine, where are you going?" He was sat at the bottom of the stairs. "Just getting a breath of fresh air." I lied.
"In this weather? You'll drown." I sighed. "Well, you could at least wait until the storm subsides." he said, and stood up. I bit my lip, trying to think of a reasonable excuse to leave now. "I like stormy weather." He looked at me briefly, then retrieved his coat from the end of the wooden banister. "Guys, we'll be back in a bit." I'm not sure whether they heard us over Sheldon and Leonard having an argument.
The weather gave me one big slap in the face as soon as I closed the front door behind Dylan and myself. "Are you serious, Max? A breath of fresh air?" I glared at him, then decided to tell him why I really wanted to leave. "It's probably just the Erasers, you know that. They told us yesterday, or have you already forgotten?"
"Well, I just want to check. It may not be. Come on." I ran forward, stepped, then jumped into the air, flapping my wings against the terrible wind and hail. Checking Dylan was behind me, I flew up to the boulder next to where I had seen the mysterious figures. My breath caught in my throat- hopefully they wouldn't have heard. "What is it?" Dylan whispered from to my left. 'It' was Fang. But not only Fang, a few others- I couldn't tell who the others were as they weren't facing us. All of them seemed physically unaffected by the hail, lightning and thunder, and one seemed to be in pain. "It's Fang." I said in a quiet voice, and a large crack of thunder almost deafened me. "Okay, I want to go back inside." Dylan gave me a confused look from under his hood. "Alright then." We flew back, landing under the rain shelter outside the house on the patio, absolutely drenched. "Sorry, Dylan. You didn't have to come with me, you know."
"It's alright, I wanted to. We can't have you going missing, can we?"
"I guess not." I chuckled. "Let's get inside." I said, turning towards the front door. "Wait."
"What?" I asked. Dylan looked down at me and I felt my stomach drop.
"Nothing. Let's go, I'm freezing."
