-Alyce-

I swiped my badge against the electronic bar on the side of the wall and proceeded through. The clicking of my heels was loud on the marble floors and the sound of my briefcase brushing on my tweed jacket was making a swishing noise.  I made the familiar walk through the reception of the Embassy up to the top floor into my office.

“Morning Alyce” Jack, the security guard smiled as he opened the door for me.

Slamming my briefcase onto my oak desk I picked up the coffee mug that was already filled with hot coffee and took a sip. In the last two months I had really got used to working here. At first it was really difficult, I had no idea what I was doing and was constantly getting lost around the the mass of meeting rooms.

On my desk was a folder with the Australian crest on it, it looked really important. I put my mug down and went around to sit down. Carefully opening the folder I looked at the index. Down the left hand side was 1-150 in roman numerals followed by dictations and headings.

“I see you have found the present” A voice spoke.

I was halfway down page vi when I heard him. Peering up, I noticed my boss. River Williams stood there. As I went to get up, he started to speak one again.

“No no, don’t let me bother you. I want you to sit in on my conference call with the Australian Prime Minister at 9am please. It will be great experience for you” He said before leaving heading up the marble corridor.

Smiling to myself like a cheshire cat I looked at the time. It was 8:30am now. River always told me how it was important to look the part and be on time. Therefore I slipped into the cloakroom which was attached to my office. It was basically a room of mirrors. I neatened up my hair and applied another layer of my red lipstick. It suited my skin colour really well. I chucked a tic-tac into my mouth to get rid of the coffee breath and then proceeded back to my desk to finish reading this paragraph on new laws.

About 8:45 I headed up to River’s office. That was another thing about him, he hated being called Mr. Williams, it was the first thing he told me when we met at the airport. His office was far bigger than mine, and was decorated with paintings. Of course for today’s occasion there was a plasma screen taking up much of the west wall. Behind his desk he had added another chair, just for me.

“Come sit down Alyce” He said pulling the chair from underneath the desk.

I tottered over in my stiletto heels and sat down crossing my legs. It was weird wearing smart clothes everyday, but some how I was making it work. Today I was wearing a black tight pencil skirt with a slit down the side and a white blouse tucked in with golden buttons.

This was going to be amazing. I would be face to face with the actual Prime Minister, well screen to screen anyway. Breath Alyce, just breath.

“That was really good Alyce. You did super. I think he approved of the U.N’s choice” River smiled at me as he turned off the video chat.

As he did that, the screen disappeared back into the wall and the room was restored to its formalness. I was completely amazed by the technology this building had. The Prime Minister sounded really nice, he was very into his job but him and River I could tell had inside jokes. That’s what I want, to be Prime Minster or the President. Maybe the Prime Minster, to be President I’d have to somehow get rid of the Monarchy.

“What are you doing tonight, a few of us are going to Kensington Palace for some drinks. You’re more than welcome to join us” River offered as I got up.
