\\ AFTERMATH //

The next day, Arden found herself sitting in one of the hospital rooms, watching Hawk sleeping soundly in the bed across from her. Thanks to the nurses knowing her mom, Arden was able to find out that Hawk went into emergency surgery as soon as he got to the hospital the night before. The nurse assigned to him told Arden that the surgery went well and Hawk would be okay, he just needed a lot of rest.

She was even able to convince the nurse to let her sit with him for a little while, especially since Hawk didn't really have any family. His parents died when he was younger and his aunt bailed on him as soon as he turned eighteen.

So, she sat with him for a while, watching his chest rise and fall as he breathed, and feeling so thankful that he was going to be okay. She wouldn't have been able to bear losing him too.

And after about an hour, Hawk began to stir in his bed and Arden looked up to see his eyes flicker open. Her heart leapt in her chest, seeing his awake.

She smiled at him, "Hey, you."

He turned his head and when he saw her sitting in the chair beside his bed, he smiled.

"Arden," He replied horsely, "Hey..."

She leaned forwards, "How are you feeling? Do you need me to call the nurse for anything?"

"I'm okay." He nodded, "They got me on some seriously effective pain meds."

She chuckled a little, "Well, I would certainly hope so."

He laughed a little too, and then after a moment, it faded into a quietness. Arden could see in his eyes that his mind had drifted off into more troubled waters. She sat there silently, not knowing what to say. She felt like she should apologize that he got caught up in all this...that he almost died for something he had no part of.

After a moment, Hawk cleared his throat, and began to speak.

"I knew Zoe had issues to work through...but I didn't know it was that bad." Hawk sighed, "I should have seen it...maybe-...maybe I could have—"

"You couldn't have known, Hawk." Arden looked up at him, "I...I recently learned that you can't always save someone, especially if they don't want to be saved. And we can't blame ourselves for that."
