Merlin One Shot (Anastasia AU):

"Merlin!" Merlin's best friend, Gwaine, called out to him.

Gwaine raced past the disgruntled vendors finally catching up with Merlin.

"Hello Gwaine," Merlin greeted the loud but friendly drunk. "What's got you so happy today? Wait let me guess, it has to do with either a tavern or a girl."

"Not this time, Merlin," Gwaine grinned.

"Really?" Merlin asked dumbfoundedly.

"Nope," Gwaine said, "It's the prince."

"What prince?" Merlin stated, now he was really confused. "Camelot doesn't have a prince Gwaine."

"Oh Merlin," Gwaine said as if he were talking to an ignorant child, "Not anymore but there used to be."

"Now I remember," Merlin said, "I think I was eight at the time. I had just came from Ealdor and was staying with Gaius. I only met him once but..."

"He died in that fire caused by that sorcerer. You know, the one that made the king hate magic," Gwaine finished.

"Yes I know," Merlin said, "Why are you-"

"The prince isn't dead," Gwaine shouted eagerly, cutting him off.

"What!" Merlin shouted making Gwaine shush him and look around at the staring villagers. Gwaine quickly pulled him down an empty alley where no one could hear their conversation.

"Yeah, rumor is that he survived and back in Camelot. The king is offering a large reward for anyone who brings him the prince," Gwaine explained excitedly.

"You're joking," Merlin exclaimed with wide eyes.

"I know, it's amazing!" Gwaine said.

"I- don't get me wrong, I totally agree but since when are you the empathetic type," Merlin said.

"Oh I'm not," Gwaine agreed, "But if we can find the prince and deliver him to the king..." Gwaine spread out his hands in a ta-da type of gesture.

"I'm not following," Merlin confessed.

Gwaine face palmed at his friend's complete naivety. "Think about how much gold the king would give us for returning his long lost son."

Finally Merlin understood, "Ohh, but how do we find the prince."

"Who said we had to find the prince," Gwaine waggled his eyebrows. At Merlin's confused look Gwaine gave a frustrated sigh but continued anyway.

"What if, all we have to do is find someone that could convince the king that he's the lost prince," Gwaine said. "Think about it, no ones seen the prince in fifteen years, how would anyone know differently."

"We could be thrown in jail Gwaine," Merlin yelled at his friend. "It's risky, dangerous even. It's... not a bad plan."

"So you're in?" Gwaine asked hopefully.

"You're my best friend," Merlin stated, "I'll always be with you. Even if it's just to save our sorry asses after the plan goes south."

Gwaine laughed, "Seriously, thank you Merlin."

"What are friends for?" Merlin smiled.

With that the two started making plans to find their fake prince.
