I Cannot Follow You Into the Midnight

The girl ran after him into the night, chasing the howling sound of the wind
Freedom lept through his fur as he streaked ahead of her
His dark gray tail waving like a lure to draw her in
Fairy clouds danced along the path, lighting the way in silvery streaks of light
Orbs glowing through the dismally midnight forest

A calm descended upon the midnight chase
Like a lion being defeated by the lamb
Its brethren jumped across clear, moonlit pastures as she counted each to each
The wolf smiled and slunk around the perimeter
Uninhibited by earthly human bounds

A lion's roar interrupted the standoff, the wolf's and the girl's heads whipped up
Out from the midnight forest stalked a golden, furred creature
Majestic in his amber eyes and regal paw steps
The girl looked across to the wolf
And back into the forest they dove.
