28. Baby Steps

Jumping high is one thing.  You can jump 4 foot?  Great.  Good for you.  Jumping goos is another thing.  So sure you can jump 4 foot.  But can you really JUMP it?  I mean, yes you can probably start on one side of the fence, go over it, and land on the other.  Woohoo.  That means nothing.  It means nothing about how high you can jump if every time you land hard on your horse's back and mouth.  If you get left behind, or forget all eq in the process.  Yes we all look like we have no idea what we're doing sometimes.  But someone who can actually jump 4 foot can do it without causing pain to the horse.  i've seen so many people lately bragging about how they can "jump high" and how proud they are of going that high.  Well guess what?  Woo freaking hoo.  That means nothing when you're just hanging on the horse and getting in the way of it's natural jump.  Someone who can actually jump high will do it without catching on the horse's mouth or landing like an elephant on the horse's back.  Yes I have jumped "high" just to see if I could do it.  Well, more like to see if my horse could do it.  Because I didn't do anything.  I sat there and tried not to catch my horse's face.  So yes I have done this.  But it was not good and I probably shouldn't have.   I'm a BIG believer in taking baby steps.  I want to perfect even the 2 foot fences I'm doing now before I even think about moving up.  So yeah, you can brag about jumping higher than me.  But sorry to say, you look awful doing it.  And not to brag but when I feel confident in my riding and attempt to do the height you are doing, I can guarantee I will have a better outcome where I don't catch my horse's mouth in my hands and I don't slam on her back and I don't let my eq completely fall apart.  So yeah, keep talking.  But I won't be listening.
